| I am not sure who wrote about the MS Server+ book but you were right it is not helpful at all. I wish I would have seen the message awhile back I would not have ordered the book.
Also if anyone can help I need the CORRECT shutdown procedures for the following systems...
Novell NetWare
Windows NT/2000
UNIX/Linux
IBM OS/2
I get different opinions on this especially UNIX/Linux.
Just want to be sure, taking the exam next week.
If you got any pointers I will more than happy to take them.
Thanks guys. Till then, peace out!

| Aaagghhh. I put together two servers last night to discover exactly what you're looking for. One Novell Netware 5 and one Linux 7.
Why did I do this and not rely on research on the web? I founf conflicting answers everywhere. What really made me laugh was the Novell shutdown command SHUTDOWN /F ... huh?
Here it is, tested and proved.
Windows: Really! Come on now!
Novell: DOWN (If there are files open Netware will prompt you to press Y or N to close open files - there is no other way to shutdown the server).
Linux: Here there are two ways. The most obvious is SHUTDOWN (with parameters like -t for specifying time delay in seconds, -r to automatically reboot the server). The other option to shutdown the server is use the INIT command. This is INIT 0 to shutdown.
Unix: Same as Linux
OS/2: See Windows.
I hope this helped. I'll be writing on Friday. Good luck!

| For the Server+ exam:
Windows NT/2000: Start button -> select Shut down -> choose the Shut Down option to shut the server down completely.
Novell: Down command
OS/2: Right-Click with the mouse anywhere on the desktop and select the Shutdown command from the menu.
Unix/Linux: Shutdown
(I didn't see them asking about any options on my exam)
Hope it helps | |

| Want to thank Mikehein for looking out for me for the shutdowns on the 4 operating systems.
It was told to me by a UNIX guy that shutdown -h or shutdown now would be the correct answer. Anyone else wants to take a shot at this.
Also for the IBM/OS2 I still need the shutdown,--not sure if it was joke when you typed--see Windows, lol. Never worked on them so I wanted to be sure before the exam.
Mikehein, the Window shutdown was for an icebreaker. Thanks again!
Johnny
P.S. Just before sending this message out I got a response from dagger. Also want to thank you too, dagger! Very helpful.

| No problem | |

| I think for Novell its
Down then Exit
For Linux, halt also works

Yes you are correct
but for the Server+ exam
they just want "Down" for Novell.
and Shutdown for Unix/Linux.

| What's up to my Tech Crew.
We are still on the shutdown stuff and I just got the cert21.com Server+ practice exam and just when I thought I had the shutdown methods corrected...
As the answer popped out for the shutdown method for Linux it stated: shutdown -r now.
Anyone got any insights about what I just found. I am curious to know because if both answers pop as...
1. shutdown
2. shutdown -r now
3.?
4.?
What do I pick?
Do you guys know the frustrations I am going through and this is on shutdowns--we are not talking about RAIDS or SCSI
Help out if you can. Peace out!

Actually, I had a Novell question where I had to know both of those... and the sequence. |
