Author Subsidize high exam costs

I just recently went to the Prometric website to register for the Server+ exam, only to find ridiculously high prices. I took the A+ exam, a few years back, but after taking various Microsoft and Cisco exams, I had forgotten that CompTIA charges $190.

Because of this high cost, I have decided that I can do without this little certification. It would have been a fun test, but not at that price.

Does anyone know if there are any third party companies that might subsidize exam costs, for individuals, possibly through advertising or volunteer product testing?

If you think that's bad in the UK we have to pay the exam price plus 17.5% valued added tax on top.

If you have passed any CompTIA exams I'm sure you can ask for a voucher which gives you a discount on an exam of your choice. I've also seen threads in i-Net+ and Network+ asking the same question.

I poked around on CompTIA's website, but the only pricing I can find are for quantity purchases, and corporate members.

Maybe I don’t know what I’m looking for. I’ll give them a call later today.

$25 is always nice!

If I do decided to take the test, I'll make sure to use that site.

You can file up to 5,000 a year in education
cost for career related training and training related expenses when you do
your taxes and get 20% of the 5000 claimed
as a tax CREDIT (not deduction). I got an extra 700 dollars or so back last year with this. The program is called Lifetime Learning credit and you can use it every year.

There is also the The HOPE Scholarship
which gives you even more back, but has more stringent qualifaction and can only be used twice in a lifetime.

Hope that helps...

I thought the Lifetime Learning Credit only counted towards eligible institution "purchases", how does this fit into that?

Im not saying you're wrong, I jsut want a little more info so I can claim a little back myself

Thanks,
Marcus

I usually dont hang out in the INET+ forums, so if you could email me, i would appreciate it.

I used this site and saved $30 on my i-Net+ exam:

I don't think I'm going to try to get a tax credit for the exams, since that will be a pain to document. I also don't know about the legality of doing that.

But I definitely will get a voucher through one of those sites, if I decide to take the exam. I never knew that something like that existed.

Save your exam receipt/payments then use that to report on form 1040A (Credit section) for Hope or Lifetime credit. But remember, this will reduce your tax somehow NOT to avoid all the taxes PLUS thi is for working people who had income tax held by the IRS only. If you are unemployed or no tax held, sorry you can't take back anything.
