Well if anyone is interested, I PASSED!..
To pass, I just the examnotes on this site and the cramsession at http://cramsession.brainbuzz.com and the associated links. especially the links from the *examnotes* page. I havent had any experience with servers, and I studied for a few days.. This is the toughest Comptia test, was actaully kinda fun.
I didnt see any Fibre-Channel, or any real SAN specific questions. Only one or two "identify this type of server" questions.
Lots of RAID in the questions, you dont need to know a plethora about RAID, but know as much as you can about levels 0,1,3,5 and 10.
Quite a few install troubleshooting questions.. The theme for most of them were "If BIOS doesnt detect it, dont worry about drivers".. lots of questions like that.
Well I hope this helps anyone who is studying for this test a little..

Very cool. like you said, kinda fun. So get off the desktop and move up to the sever room. The airconditioner always keeps it nice and cool. I would always rather deal with hardware problems than users, ya know?

Just curious, are you allowed to mark your questions and revisit them?

How much time did you have left?

Yes you are allowed to mark questions, well I had about 18-20 minutes left when i finished the 80th question, then I spent about 8more minutes reviewing my marked answers. Its a mix between short one sentence questions and paragrah questions, I dont think any of them exceeded a paragraph.
only a couple 2 paragraph ones, so you have time to finish the test.

You suggest it is possible to pass this exam even if you have had no experience with servers? Anyone else have opinions on this?

Tell it like it is! Actually, I don't think you need hands-on for any of the CompTIA exams, but it does help . . . especially when interviewing.

Anything is possible. But IMO, you're only cheating yourself. Try and find a balance between experience and certification.

Confession: I never touched a Novell server till my 4th test... I never networked more than 3 computers during my MCSE. I went to an interview one day and got ABSOLUTELY HAMMERED with technical questions that would have been easily answered if only I had the experience neccessary. This was 2 years ago.
Keep in mind though, I didn't have the $$$$ to pay for expensive training classes... and my employer was too cheap to pay for my studies/certs.

The Good Part: I am now in my 2nd Sys Admin position and I am WAY DEEP in terms of learning.... I am a sponge right now! The cool thing is, I have the certs I really want right now (with the exception of CCNP/CCDP and Compaq ASE) so I haven't been focusing my energy on getting certified... just learning. That's the joy of "getting your certs out of the way". However, I paid the price early in my quest to come up in the IT industry.

The Moral: Take a look at what you've got... your financial situation, your work benefits, the technology in your work environment, your access to other resources such as msg boards like ExamNotes or your Friends' networks, the current job market, and just work with it. Find a route that works best for you. Becuase there's too much darn controversy out there as to the value of certification in the job market.

My lucky break from being a Tech/Phone Support ROBOT came when a this one guy BROWN-NOSED his way into creating a position for himself as the Director of IT for his company (100+ employees). He contacted a recruiter and wanted to bring on the company's first Systems Administrator. Knowing ABSOLUTELY nothing about IT... he was somehow sold on the idea that "MCSE is a must". So there I was, I landed my first Sys Admin job by virtue of my certification and willingness to accept a couple thousand less than the other candidates!

Keep in mind why you're trying to get certified: Career Advancement. With career advancement comes the thrill of the Job Hunt. Job hunting is one big game... just play your cards right. You'll win everytime.

Let me tell you this is a great accomplishment. I currently work in the field, have 15+ years of experience, bought the Measureup questions (useless) not a question was there, bought the Microsoft Press book, used all of my real world experience and only got a 69. Some of my questions were really out in left field, and I even studied the same stuff you did!! By the way I also am generally a great test taker, and I contract teach networking for fun and profit. Great job!!
