Author Server+ Exam

Is the Server+ exam hard? May sound like a dumb question but I was thinking of taking that and Network+ early next year, before I go for it big time with UNIX and Win2K.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Go with N+, as far as I know that SVR+ is not bulid for people with no knowledge on SVR (NO newbie).

So, expect to be hard and check with comptia homepage.

I agree with Kasor, you should start with some entry level exams first if you have no experience hands on or otherwise. As far as the Server+ test goes that is still to be determined on how hard it's going to be.

The Server+ exam is no exam to start with, but to finish with. The beta shows that this exam is hard but fair. You should have several years of experience before taking this test. You should know all about SCSI, RAID levels and troubleshooting on ANY server. This means you should be familiar with the basics of Novell, Windows NT, Unix/Linux and OS2. The Network+ exam is a easy compared with Server+. Since there are no books available yet it is also hard to prepare for this test. The cramsession provides by http://www.cramsession.com gives you a little help, but is to detailed in some aspects and covers not all the topics that where in the betatest, but it is more than nothing! If you did not have any problems with the A+ and Network+ tests and are working with servers (hard- and software based) every day you can give it a shot, otherwise: wait untill you have more hands on knowledge.

All true and timely. It may be the last in a complement of certs for which CompTIA will issue a comprehensive cert a la MCSE..etc

Just to let everyone know I was a SME in developing Server + and this exam is very experienced related, 18-24 months server experience is a must to pass. A book alone will not help. This is about all I can tell you about this exam due to confidence agreement. Good Luck

So far I have taken the A+, Network+, I-Net+, CNA and CNE awards. I cannot decide whether to do the Server+ next or wait for a while to see how it becomes established.

The Comptia exams don't seem to hold a high level of respect or confidence in the UK - so is this going to be of benefit?

I feel that CompTIA establish the objectives very well and although its always hard to gauge individuals experiance (do I know it all?) I feel that this exam could be suitable (with the right prep) for anyone with an interest in computers. That said 'starting out' the A+ is a logical beginning to ANY career path. Possibly for those new to the path of testing would be better suited to waiting a while and concentrating on other certs though, as there is always a bit of cross over in the subjects.
Remember March is coming and the books will be out there!

I took my Network+ for the first time after taking the Server+ beta. After comparing the two I have to say the Server+ was far more difficult. I was a server field technician for 3 years and the test caught me completely off guard. I didn't fail it bad, but I still failed. I cant see how you can pass Server+ without two things. First is experience in the field, second is Network+. Now that I have Net+ under my belt and have studied for the server+, I wont stop until I pass it. A lot of the beta questions came straight off of the Network + test. I don't imagine that will continue in the live version.

Just my two cents.
