Hi;

I've been primarily using the Server+ Cert Bible from HungryMinds plus whatever else I can find on SCSI and RAID to study with.

My marks from the Cert Bible CD range from 95 to 100 percent. For the people who have written the test; do you think those questions should be enough to pass the exam, or does the book leave out areas that are covered in the test, and not covered very much in the book?

Tks in advance.

Well, I'm writing in the AM (Thursday)
and I am using the same book (S+ bible) and anything else I can get my hands on from the net.

I'm feeling pretty confident
but I will spend the rest of this evening
doing some last minute cramming.

I almost picked up the Server+ Exam Cram that was at my local book store (why is it not available yet on Amazon is beyond me)
I did a quick look through the pages and didn't notice anything that I didn't already know from my current study material. So I passed on it. Plus that book was kind of "thin".

I'll post how I did tomorrow when I get back.
Wish me luck ..
and good luck to you too

I am going to write on Sunday, the 14th. I am also using Server+ bible and the testing cd-rom. I've updated it with lastest Boson version and the questions have changed. I have been reading the past forums looking to see what is on the test and what comes close to the test questions. It seems VN publishing and transcenders is close. Well gentlemen, good luck this week and let us know how you did.

OK,

I am taking SERVER+ on Monday October 8th. Almost everyone seems to be using the Server+ Bible. I am studying from Server+ for Dummies as my Primary source and Server+ Certification Study Guide (by Syngress/Osborne) as my second source. These are all i'm using to prepare.

I will be reviewing and practicing right up to the exam.

I will let you all know how I did from just just using these study sources.

Once I pass the this (he say's confidently) I will be off to the land of MICROSOFT.

My target: Exam 70-210

I primarily used the Server+ Bible and used the VN Publishing tests as well (about $16, pretty cheap). Most everything I remember in the exam was covered in the Server+ Bible, and though the Hungry Minds questions were a decent assessment tool, I found the VN Publishing exams to be a better assessment.

Tks for the replies guys;

I haven't heard of the VN tests before. Downloaded the demo and did quite well on the demo. Passed them the first time (woohoo!) One thing that I liked about them was that they covered the W2K OS. That is something that I noticed was missing from the Cert Bible.

From what I guess from the couple of remarks posted that VN tests are considered good. For the cost of $17 U.S., it might not be a bad investment to purchase it and review my knowledge before I write. I thought that the exhibits were quite good. Especially the DIMM question.

I'm looking at writing my test late next week and will be practicing my tests until then.

phew....I passed it!
I got 88%. Not bad at all

I'm back home now from the exam, and I'm ready for a bottle of Vodka after that,
Just kidding....LOL

It was not that bad at all. Not as hard as I thought it was going to be.
The questions are all scenario based, all multiple choice and a one figure identification
of a crossover cable.

Here is the scoop:

1. Know what a crossover cable looks like (what wires are crossed)
They go as follows:
1-2
2-6
3-1
6-2
The rest are not assigned
Know what a crossover cable is used for.

2. You will be asked about RAID levels. (don't panic) the only ones on my exam were RAID levels 0/1, 1, 3, and 5.
I found that the right answer to the questions just popped out at you. If you know your RAID levels you will do fine.

3. SCSI. Know your SCSI lengths and Pin count. I didn't find anything out of the usual with the SCSI questions. If you memorize the lengths and pins, you will do fine.

4. BIOS. Know what "flashing" a BIOS means., Also remember what NOT to do during and BIOS upgrade (don't turn the system off!)

5. Backups. Remember to Verify your backups. Also I found questions on the different back up methods (Daily backup, Differential, Incremental also Grandfather/Father/Son rotation methods....etc)
Also memorize how many tapes it takes to perform a Restore based on these backup methods.

6. SNMP. Know where SNMP thresholds are set (SNMP monitor). Understand what a SNMP monitor is and what it is used for)

7. I noticed a lot of basic troubleshooting questions. If you have A+ and Network+ and know your RAID and SCSI, you will do fine. There are no OSI model questions
or Network device questions (only a A NIC was mentioned a few times)

8. This is where I screwed up I think. A lot of questions were just experience questions. So you just have to use common sense
for the answer. I think I analyzed the question/answers too much and dinged myself a few times and chose the wrong answer.
For example: If you are placing server units in a Rack...how do you do it. The correct answer is By the Manufacturers Documentation. If that answer is not present then choose heavy components at the bottom light components at the top.

9. Know how to perform a shutdown across NT, OS/2, and Linux

There were no W2K OS questions.

This post is getting long
but good for starters

I used the Server+ Bible and any free online
practice tests I could find on the web.

I'll post more later this week.

Congrats on the pass.

From what you had, I hopefully won't have too much of a problem. I just like to be as prepared as possible before I write a test.

By the way, a SCSI cable is one of those big messy ones, right?

NO JOY.

I took the exam tonight and i'm gonna tell you it what very TEDIOUS and hard. Tediousness wins over the difficulty of the exam. It was time consuming to read a good portion of the questions which really eats into your time.

I used the SERVER+ for DUMMIES as my main study source and achieved a score of 61%. I had 20 questions to go and under 2 minutes to left on the clock. I guessed the last 20 questions by simply randomly clicking on any answer. IF i had a good 15 or 20 minutes I probably could have read these questions and passed the exam.

I wasted time reading and re-reading lengthy scenario questions.

The good news is that I saw a good bit of the DUMMIES CD-ROM questions(that came with the book) on the exam. I have to change my plan of action. I recommend that you guys skip over the lengthy scenario questions and "MARK" them. Go to all of the short questions and get them out of the way!!! This was $190 lesson I learned today so take heed.

I averaged 35 to 45 minutes in my practice exams but ended up losing time on the actual exam.

Like most people have said on this forum and it is true...KNOW SCSI and RAID. I mean KNOW THEM!!! KNOW everything you can about how they are incorporated in various server set-ups. Know UPS as well.

Well I'll reschedule to take it in a couple of weeks. This will be by second try and I hope my last.

The Dummies Book is very good and I know can pass using it plus the CD-ROM that comes with it. The CD-ROM has a bank of 300+ questions. And the questions are very good. I know I haven't seen them all yet. But I will now.

Sorry to here that you failed UK Boy. I barely passed it, though I knew that I had not taken as much time to prepare as I should have. I was getting antsy to get through with it.

It is definitely a test that will likely require most takers to use a lot of time. I, too, used nearly all but 20 minutes of the limit, and I typically have finished most of my exams in a half hour, or so.

Good luck on the next go round. I bet you'll pass. If you got 61%, but didn't answer 20 questions, then it sounds like you were on a good track the first part of the exam. Getting the exposure to it to better prepare for a retake is at least one positive side.

Hi,

Thanks.

I just want to correct part of your response. I did complete the last 20 questions. I just don't know which ones I got right due to how fast i had to answer them.

I get em next time 'I'll Be Back'

Hey all,
here is part II of some more Server+ exam tips that I didn't have time to include in my first post:

Understand how to use a POST hardware adapter and where to find the error codes (they will be displayed on
the cards LED screen)

Understand server room environmental issues (Temperature for example)
You will be asked basic questions on what would be an environmental issues within a server room.
Key words to remember : Fan, Air conditioner, Temperature, Fire extinguisher, ventilation systems.)
I found most of these types of question to be straight forward with a common sense answer. and I only remember
being asked no more then 3 questions.

Understand what a KVM is (keyboard/video/mouse or monitor. I have seen both terms used.

There were a few questions on UPS (uninterruptible power supply).
Understand what a UPS is, why it is important to Test the UPS and how to install a UPS ( uses a serial cable to attach to the server)
and the different sizes of UPS's.

Something I forgot to mention in my first post
about how to shut down different NOS. It's for Win NT, OS/2, Novell, and Unix. (It was Unix not Linux and I forgot
to add Novell to the list)

Now about the Disaster Recovery part of the exam.
....you know, I can't remember too much about it.
I remember something about when to prepare a Disaster Recovery plan (Before you implement your server install).
But other then that, I am drawing a blank. I think most of the Disaster recovery questions were lumped in
with the Backup/Restore section.

That's about it
I hope this all made sense
Good luck

Thank You Dagger.

I actually drew a blank after the exam. I do remember seeing that question on use of the POST hardware adapter.

Every little bit helps

I failed also. My score was 68 and I'll tell you that my test was 3/4 backup and disaster recovery.
I think I had 2 gimmes. Out of all the books and test preps I have, not one of them came close to the actual test. I wish I had got the test Dagger received. I am going to wait and see if there is another test prep that is close to the real test. I will start this again in January. I hope there is a test prep close enough to the real test by then. I am going concentrate on the upgrade to NT4 to 2000 test. Good luck everyone.

I'm sorry to hear you did not pass poolit,
I was surprised you said that 3/4 of the test you took was on backup and disaster recovery. There shouldn't off been
that many questions since only 12% of the exam is suppose to be on those topics
not 75%.

But you were close, I bet you will
pass it next time round

I was wondering, do you have any
hands on experience with servers?

2001-10-14, 7:31 pm

Hey! We'll get'em next time.

You and I are on the same wavelength Poolit. I just took my MS 70-210 exam today and passed it! YES!!! Amen for those places that open on Sundays I had to drive out my way to get to the test center, but it was worth the trip. Tough to take these exam during a working day.

Well any way I was studying for the SERVER+ and WIN Professional (exam 210) and now I'm headed right towards WIN Server (exam 215).

I used Troytec's study guide.....they where right on target. Their study guide is clean, abridged, and easy to read. I also used Exam Cram and New Riders Win Professional training guide. My score was 740(passing score is 540). I'll take it . I was mentally drained from my efforts in the SERVER+.

Hey, Poolit I just bought the new EXAM CRAM SERVER+ and it has a good bit of what I saw in the exam. I think you should check it out from what I see it will help us pass on the next shot. I see why they waited to put the book out. The questions are very close.

Dagger, UkBoy, Thanks for the lift. I have about 20 years in the computer business. Lately I have been a Project lead for the last couple of years. I write the tests to keep up on the technology for rollouts and server builds. Also, I have a few guys who are new to the field and I need to walk them through a build or do some repair on workstations and servers. Server Plus should have been a cakewalk for me but it seems every question was vague. I am going to wait till next year and start on Server plus again. I will be in the forum to see what is new and what techs have to say about it. I am going to purchase the exam cram book. I've always had good luck with them especially when I was studying for my NT 4 exams.

Thankx,
Poolit
