I haven't bought mine yet, but I notice that none of these books has very good reviews at Amazon . . . not even Sybex, and that is the book series that I usually go with. I think I will wait a bit longer before trying out for this one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Right now I am reading Server+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide. The first two chapters have been boring me to to death .(Just a review of what I have already learned with A+ and network+).I hope it picks up soon.I may pick up a 2nd book later after I am done with this one.
Randy

2001-06-21, 7:58 am

Well, the whole subject area does seem closer to the A+ area than the software area. So I can see how there will be some overlap. But it seems that this exam will not be so easy as CompTIA's other ones. I want to see how other people find these books before springing for any, although now I am leaning towards the All In One Guide as well.

Too early, unless u work with Svr as day to day basic.

Otherwise, suggest to wait for the second edition. After all the error, feedback, review they got from the first print.

I looked at an excerpt of the Server+ Certification Bible on Fatbrain.com. In the short passage, I found two errors. The description of the WINS server is totally wrong (makes you wonder). The description of a bridge is off base in that it describes a specialized bridge (known as a translating bridge) not the general definition of a bridge. With two errors like this, I wonder how much other misinformation is in this book. I'm waiting to see the New Rider's book.

The Sybex Server+ book is fairly easy reading - Just starting the third chapter - The author works to bring in some personality into the text - No doubt to lighten it up - Content is broad based with some field senarios - Test CDROM looks OK -
Passed the Network+ and i-Net+ with Sybex so It's worth a try -

A good "notes" book would be Que's series - Used for Network+ in addition to Sybex - Would be good if a Serve+ series was added - Regards -

Although the Server + exam was on my to do list this definatley moves it to the forefront. I will tell you how the sybex book is when I get it.

Could not have happened at a better time I take the CCNA exam on the 11th so I guess I will do server+ next.

I will keep you posted.

See what regeristering your books can do for you.

I got the same message this morning. Although I don't really remember registering for the contest. I wish it had better reviews at Amazon . . . it makes me kind of wonder how reliable it is . . .
fizz85

2001-07-04, 2:22 pm

No it must have happened when I registered my CCNA sybex book or when I was at the site and logged in to the sybex or something like that. But we shall see if the book comes.

What the hay it is free

I wish I pick a different book. Server+ all in one is a very boring book that goes into way too much detail ( a lot of stuff I already learned with A+ and Network+ )I been reading it for about 4 weeks and only got to chapter 8.chapter 7 was ok only because it was on SCSI technology which is my week point.I would not recommend this book to be your only sorce of study.I think I will read it only once then get a 2nd book.I will use the server+ all in one as a reference book only.
ace123

2001-07-19, 1:32 pm

I just finish the server+ all in one book today.
I will pick up my 2nd book soon.I am going to take a few day break before reading my next book. I plan on useing the all in one book for reference.a few things I notice about the book are
1) Way too much detail
2) Boring to read
3) The book repeats it self alot from one chapter to another later
4) some chapter seem too long and winded
fizz85

2001-07-21, 8:20 pm

Hey randy you still waiting on the voucher?

I have not recieved mine yet.

I hope not. I think they are holding out because they just don't want us to rush in there unprepared. Good business sense? Yes. Does it help me? no.

Well they say patience is a Virtue so, just gotta wait

Are you sure you read the excerpt...Cause i have the book, and descriptions are bang on! I have been reading the book for 2 weeks now, and am nearly complete it. I find the book easy to read and follow. The sample test questions are great, because they have detail answers, and point you to the proper chapters incase you need to brush up. Also there is a great sample test of a 100 questions are the back of the book, and the CD has an excellent test taking program on it. I bought this book by comparing the Comptia Blue Print to the books Table of COntents. They matched well, and i was extremely delighted when i got the book, and started reading it, and found how well organized the book was. This book will not only serve me well to pass the exam, but it will be an extremely usefull desktop companion book. You will be able to use it to look up things that will used everyday in your job...I know, i have used it several times already

2001-08-01, 10:06 am

Thanks Ace123 keep us posted,
I see mixed reviews on Amazon
but mostly good reviews. I believe since
this book is the first version there are some minor issues that will have to be
fixed up for the next print. But I read that
the Server+ bible is on target for the exam.
Personally I don't care if there is a spelling mistake or flub in a graphic most of my study guides have some issues especially the ones I bought at that were the first print. I just want to know what I need to know to pass the exam. Experience is what counts when it comes to servers in my opinion.

2001-08-03, 8:15 am

Picked up the book a week ago, and I am flying through it. I like it so far as well. I saw some of the comments on amazon, and found it really strange about the amount of detail the one guy went in to. He knew a hell of alot for someone studying for the exam..wow! I keep seeing comments about certain authors bashing books...could the sybex people be doing this..I hope not. There are always tech errors, and typos, etc in all books. I have not come across anything that i thought was bad. I for sure like the test questions...They seem excellent to me. Let's hope they help me pass the test...I do feel confident about that.

I will let everyone know how it goes!!!!!!!!!!

Reading is the gateway to knowledge!

are running neck and neck.

who will win?
Are there any last remarks that can help others decide which book they shoud pick?

2001-08-05, 6:42 am

Well out of the two mentioned I found the All-in-One Exam Guide a technical hardware book rather then a cert book. I would recommend it for someone studying for the A+ core exam. I found there is a lot of non-Server+ exam based information that just confused me and made it difficult to focus on what I needed to know for the Server+ exam. It's like computer hardware book with Server+ put on the cover. But, the book is well written "technically" but I would not use this book as my only source for studying.

The Server+ Certification Training Kit I found has way too much information on Windows 2000 for being a vendor neutral cert book. This book is from Microsoft and even includes an encyclopedia of their own networking definitions....so much for vendor neutral. The practice test questions at the end of the chapters were "thin" and not really scenario based but quick one liner questions. Sorry folks....I just didn't like this one. It was too Microsoft(ish)

Server+ Certification Bible is the only book I found so far that is straight exam based and didn't bore the hell out of me to read. It's not the best cert book I've read but it's not the worst and out of all the major Server+ cert books out there this one didn't tick me off with too much technical information.

As for some of the other books , well they are not available at my local book store (well Sybex S+ is but we all know about that one getting revised already) so I will have to wait until the others show up on the shelves before I can check them out.
Except for those Exam Prep and Exam Cram books they are not published yet but they for A+ and Network+ they were good brain dump books. I don't know how it will work for Server+ though since the Server+ exams is not based on fact but real world predicaments. That's why it is a hard exam and recommended for people with 2 years server experience. But Exam Prep and Exam cram books I found handy as a quick read before I took the real exam but not used as my main study guide.

Dagger,

Thanks for the great summary of the currently available books that cover the Server+ exam. I agree with most everything you've said. I'd like to see your opinions of the other books that will be coming on out Server+ in the next few months.

I'd also really like to hear from people who have taken the exam and get their opinion of how well the book they used to study for the exam prepared them for the exam!

My opinion on the All-In-One Server+ book is that it's more of a computer hardware book than anything else. You could of read Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs, 12th edition and gain the same knowledge (I read it). The only major difference between the two is that the All-In-One has a full chapter on RAID technology.

Also, if you're already A+ and Network+ certified, you will find that you know most of the stuff in the All-In-One book. I found myself skipping through the chapters.

Basically, it's a good book if you're not familiar with computer hardware but it's not a good book if you're studying for the Server+ exam. The Server+ Certification Bible appears to do a better job. I'm going to give that a try.
bassackwards

2001-09-12, 10:56 am

The Server+ Bible is pretty good but as you said if you're already A+ and Net+ then you already know most of the material. I have however found a wrong answer on one of it's tests (QID 206).

You have ordered a SCSI card from a vendor for replacement. Which of the following should you provide the vendor to ensure that you get an identical card as replacement? (Choose the best option.)

A. The model number of the card.
B. The serial number of the card.
C. The vendor part number of the card.
D. The vendor part of the CPU.

Their answer was B.
As a certified Compaq technician I order replacement parts from them on a near daily basis. So I chose C because when ordering a replacement part you ALWAYS use the SPS (spares) part number! NEVER the serial number! The serial number is for verifying warranty status!

Yes I clicked on the "E-mail corrections to author" button but the email bounced back.
dagger

2001-09-12, 12:15 pm

Yeah but how do you
know that your answer is the answer
CompTIA wants for the real exam?

I've said this in a previous post,
how you need to know the answer CompTIA
wants and not the answer most people think is "more" correct in real life.

This is the normal CompTIA exam taking
approch.

That is why we come here to this forum
to get the scoop on the real exam questions
from other members who have already taken the exam.

It helps us out a lot
Doug_Black

2001-09-12, 9:56 pm

The simple answer to the question is to contact by email or by phone companies (vendors) like Adaptec, Mylex, QLogic & etcetra. They will gladly answer these type of questions as for their company policy and procedures and being that most of them are CompTIA members, they also had input for the CompTIA Exams!!

You can also compare context from two or more books and share your questions with other members here so we can also give are expert opinions and experiences to these questions. Most people working on the Server+ exam already have several other certifications and possible years of IT experience so this helps when you sit the exam.

I hope this helps,

Doug

This is part of my daily job (I've been doing it almost 3 yrs). Besides Compaq, I also order replacement parts from HP, IBM, and 3 different vendor catalogs. In EVERY case you ALWAYS use the vendor part #! I can't believe that Comptia would require an obviously wrong answer to one of their questions. Having taken (and passed) both the A+ and Net+ I agree some of the questions are based largely on opinions but I have yet to run across one that requires a wrong answer.

If you don't believe me, just go to one of the above mentioned websites and do a part lookup!
