| Hey all you Linux guru's out there, I am looking at getting a Liniux box up again (first time since I took the Linux+). I know the basics of Linux how to get around, install apps, etc. (obviously since I have my Linux+), but what I have lacked in the past is utilizaion of the Internet on my Linux boxes. Unfortunately the only station available for a Linux distro is connected to the Internet through a wireless router (Linksys 54G). My wireless card however is a M$ POS that barely runs well on Windows. I tried once once before to get this station up using a wrapper (I forget which one), but M$ resilence won out. So back to the point, I want to make a new Linux box, I want internet and I will need a new Wireless card. I have searched the internet most of the afternoon only to come across mixed reviews everywhere. What I want to know is what wireless cards you guys/girls are using. The plan right now (after around 5 Linux distro matchup tests all came out the same) is to look into Kubunto (derived from Ubunto). If I do not like this, I will go back to my favorite thus far, Gentoo. So let me know what wireless cards you are using and even what distros you prefer and I will be forever in your debt*.

| Wow I just finally looked at all my misspellings of Linux *rips up Linux+ card*. Anyways, I have decided to go with the linksys 54g card as I have read that the ndis wrapper works well with it and there is a compatible driver from ralink. If anyone is actually reading this, I will update this thread once I get the machine up and running, just in case there are any Linux newbs out there like me. | |

| My guess is that you will *love* Ubuntu, most people who try it do.
I am not familiar with wireless, myself still fighting tooth and claw with modems half the time, but we are listening, so please post any adventures you have with Linux here. | |

| I had Kubuntu up for a whole night using my MN-730 wireless card (yup...a M$ wireless card in a Linux box) but for some reason after around 18 hours of being up the interent connection went down. I could still ping the Default Gateway and access my Windows machine on the network, ut no internet access. The Windows machine on the other hand was using the internet just fine. So I have decided to switch distros, mainly because I just didn't feel that comfortable with it. I am not sure which one I will use. I have already tried the new Fedora Core, but that wouldn't let my wireless card get up and going. I am currently downloading the latest Debian, both DVD isos. If this does not work, I will try out Mandrake or whatever they call it now (I think it is something like Mandriva). I'll let you know how it goes. | |

| This is typical of my experience with Linux as well. If one distro doesn't work, try another! If none of them work, try Windows! |
