I was installing the JDE extensions for my GNU Emacs setup and the instructions at the website instructed me to do this to extract the files:

$ gzip -cd jde-latest.tar.gz | tar xvf -

My question is: what is the dash at the end of the command line supposed to do?

And yes, I did rtfm and the manpages, but to no avail. Any ideas anyone?
