The best distro finally has released a new official version (for those unlike myself who run slackware and keep current with all the packages and kernels)

Well I have kind of had 10.0 for a while since I keep up with all the latest packages and the very latest kernels. I am running kernel 2.6.7. It's great; no problems. I have had a few sound issues with ALSA as have had others, but fooling around with it gets it to work. Slackware just revently changed from XFree86 to X.org as its X server. No problems with the changeover. In fact, X.org is VERY similar to XFree86.

I may just try out Slackware when I have some time. I have some space free on my FreeBSD box.

Slackware is actually similar to FreeBSD. It's called by many the most "Unix like" Linux distro. If you are used to FBSD, Slackware should take no time to learn.

I actually prefer FreeBSD. The ports system can't be beat.

Yes the ports system is great. I use swaret (www.swaret.org) for slackware and it's pretty darn good itself.

Yes, swaret save you a ton of work. I have used it and found that it was great!

I just installed 10.1 and am confused. I had used Redhat before and had a lovely desktop with KDE, but now that Slackware has switched to X.org my old desktop problems seem to have returned! Ine of these days I will learn not to install any GUIs with Linux!

What problems? X.org is very very similar to XFree86.

I could get better than 800x600 with my chipset. Now I am back to having to use a lower res.
