I am very excited about a new linux job I started 3 weeks ago.
Bad news is we were told yesterday that the company bringing a linux trainer on site in 1 month and every one must attend a 1 week RHCE training session and take the RHCE certs on the last day. I only have 3 weeks experience so I am scared. We're automatically force into 1 year contract or pay the company $1900 if we leave before a year.
I have been playing with linux, solaris and unix for some time so I'm familiar with many of the commands, but I'm see myself a newbee.

I would like to get a jumb start before class. Can any one tell where to start?

Get a copy of Red Hat and load it onto a server . . . I would recommend not installing the X Window system and learning how to do everything at the command line. Then get a book designed to help you pass the RHCE and study like crazy. Linux really isn't that hard, there are a few areas that I am still rusty at, but most good books will take you through most of what you need to know. Post your questions here and I will help you with what I can.

So far I got the Sybex RHCE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 w/workstation CD.
I don't have the server CD, so I download Fedora 3.
When I attempted to install Fedora 3 I didn't get an expert option. Is the Text install option the command line or it means no mouse.

No, the text install option means that instead of being presented with a graphical installer, it shows you the tezt installer . . . there's really not much difference when you set up except with the graphical installer, you select the pacjages you want with the mouse, and with the text mode installer, you do it with your keyboard.

A word of warning . . . when setting up Red Hat, you are prompted to set your ipchains firewall, a type of packet filter . . . if you choose to use the machine as a web server or MySQL server make sure that the appropriate ports are left open (80 and 3306, respectively), otherwise you won't be able to connect and may not know why.

You will next be given a series of options . . . you can choose a default role (web, dns, database, etc.) server or desktop role; or you can select the packages that you want by hand. Choose this latter option only if you are very familiar with the packages. Just make sure you de-select GNOME, KDE, fvwm2, XFree86, etc, so that you don't install a windowing system. You will want to install all the developer tools since you will need many of them to install source packages.

My suggestion would be to install your machine in the role os a certain type of server, say dns or web, so that you will get used to operating your machine as a server, which the RHCE exam focuses exclusively on, I believe.

Good luck.
