I'm finding that trying to install mandrake can be a very invigorating task, first no boot from cd, then manage to make boot disk and now not recognise cd disk as being the proper one, now am regretting deleting iso image after converting... must download again and try the iso on cd to see if boot disk will point to recognisable file on that.

?

are you having problem with hardware issues, such as not able to select cd as a boot device in bios or are you having problem with burning bootable cd with the image?

mandrake install (assuming 9.*), dispite my b*tching about its stupid interface, is easy but it seem that you are having problem with the fundamental, which I suspect would be of issue with or without the OS being linux.

hard drive is fresh formatted. the computer does read from cd, just wont boot from it. 4x dino.

cdrom will read any of the linux cd's but will not execute anything.

booting from win 98 floppy, trying linux progs result in 'this program must be run under win 32 message'

made linux boot floppy from cdrom.img, the floppy loads a gui but moving from there gives message that 'cdrom disk does not appear to be a linux disk' or something to that effect.

I have booted from win98 boot floppy, run winnt and am installing 2k pro, the computer is capable of reading cdrom if instructed to go to particular path.
I will try to install linux from there.

I tried the mandrake cd#1 in a 2k server box, the install starts, reboots computer to 2k server, restarts install, reboots to 2k server restarts install, reboots to 2k server etc etc etc

is .img the linux extension for an executable file

The problem seems to be in my installation disk, it will not work in a new computer either. "that disk dows not seem to be a mandrake linux installation cdrom" comes back on all computers that I try. I have tried burning the iso straight to cd, extracting the files to hdd and then burning to cd, doesnt work either way.

I have downloaded all three disks and tried both the iso and extracted version of each, floppy boot or autorun from cd will both load gui but neither will respond to the kernel.

I'm guessing the kernel searches for a specific file on the cdrom, cant seem to find out what that file

your iso was good? where did you dl it? may do a md5 check after you dl.

I usually download from large education mirrors

if you are sure what you are downloading is correct, just reburn I guess.

on windows, I just use roxio easy cd creator and then file, record cd from image, select iso and burn.

was gonna suggest you make boot disk from the alternative image folder to see if that matters but apprently not the case.
