Youy guys can just kick my bum for being so dumb, but how is this competition? Don't get me wrong, I think competition is good for the consumer, but selling users Office Suites for Linux? My Linux machines already are running *free* office suites. I am afraid I don't see how they will make money with this. If they were targeting Windows and Mac users as well, maybe, but why would the Linux/BSD crowd want to pay for something that they can get for free???

You know what I read the heading:

Sun Unveils Windows Replacement but kind of whipped thru the article.. I thought they were coming out with an OS that ran on Linux with a Gui based on Java. Sorry.

They did say the suite would run on any system that office 2k worked on though.

OK, now *that* might make difference. But just having another office suite on Linux wouldn't encourage me to buy it! Giving Windows users another option, on the other hand may pose a threat to Microsoft eventually . . .

I suppose. I don't think windows user's have to many complaints about office. It's more about the OS. I've never had any real complaints about office. Plus, for browsing and email I now use Mozilla. A lot of my companies customers use Netscape. As for Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint, who knows. Maybe they will steal some business, but my guess is if they couldn't do it with staroffice for free then why do they think they can do it with Java blah blah blah.

Besides, Mad Hatter had a ring to it, this Java Desktop blah Blah name has got to go.

Well, you have a point, but a cheap *well-marketed* alternative would be a good option for a lot of people. I admit that Star Office never had as streamlined a look as MS Office, though, and there lack of a replacement for Access was a big minus. One gripe: Java runs much slower than truly compiled languages and that could be annoying to a lot of people.

Java Sucks.. I mean it has it's uses with small applets but it is dog slow. At my current job they spent $1 Million on a program that accesses our DataBase. It literally takes about 2-3 mins( on a good day) to pull up a record. 5-6 mins( on an average day) and NEVER ( on a bad day). My school is going to be replacing C\C++ with Java, because it's "popular".. The teachers are mad but the decisions been made.. I should be able to make it thru the C\C++ before it becomes Java.

I agree. Java in no way measures up to its hype. Like you said, it is good for small apps, but for full-scale applications like office packages or browsers, it's a very poor trade-off, even with the "faster machines" we have nowadays . . . I remember hearing that the new faster machines we have now should make the bytecode of Java not so slow, but they still don't run as fast as a decently coded C/C++ package.
