Who here has taken a Linux cert?

| I'm wanting feedback from anyone here who has taken any linux cert tests?
What are the Red Hat tests like?
How difficult is the Linux+ test?
What other Linux certs are out there worth mentioning?
Thanks

| rhce test includes 3 part, 2 lab and 1 basic multiple choice.
linux +, multiple choice, from feedback it is heavy hardware.
other certs
sair: still exist?
lpi: standard multiple choice.
difficulty,
linux +
lpi
redhat
it would be more helpful if we know what your skill level is. If you are a beginner, set a goal, but the main goal should be how to use linux, rather than what cert because certification in *nix is not that heavily valued so it is more important that you are competent.

| I have taken 3 cert tests (if you can't A+ as one) and Linux+ was the easiest certification test I've taken and honestly probably the easiest I will ever take.
Be sure to learn linux first before worrying about certs. Certs are actually looked down upon by some of the hardcore Linux users.

Do you think that is the case because the nature of *nix? I mean you have to immerse yourself to learn it so a natural offshoot of that is a deeper understanding hence the ease of the exam? just thinking out loud...

| Well, I've personally only barely tinkered with Linux, but this is information mainly for a friend of mine and also something that I would use later on, AFTER I learn more about using Linux.
My friend is a Unix guy. I don't know his level, but I do know that he is coming from Unix and wants to learn more about Linux and eventually get a cert in that. I'm just trying to gather more information for him (and me, for later on) on the different certifications.
He did mention LPI as one that he was looking at. I think his main experience is with Solaris.
Linux+ sounds like a good one to aim for (for myself). I'm not looking to be a Linux admin right away. I'm looking to add another skillset to my already established Winblows experience. A lot of jobs listings that I've seen lately are asking for a diverse skillset, sort of a jack-of-all-trades, when it comes to OS support. I want to spend a couple months with my head buried in a few networked linux boxes that I setup...then I'll look into the certification. Then I'll at least be able to say I can do some basic Linux support.
Thanks for your time.

| ..difficulty,
..
..linux +
..lpi
..redhat
Is that list from easiest to hardest? I would assume so. I hear redhat isn't easy, especially since it involves actual lab tests (which seems like more realistic testing to me).
Also, anyone know of the price of taking these tests? I've had a hard time trying to track down actual pricing of the tests themselves. Usually what I can find are links to test centers or prices for taking classes.
Thanks

| I took the Linux+ and thought that it was very easy. | |

| looks questionable. I would strongly view SAIR negatively.
thompson learning is certainly strong... prometric, many text books use in colleges, training etc... but all the fuss with SAIR and its dispute with GNU... and then they spun off the SAME executives into an .org to give it legitimacy... and now its back to thompson...
last newsletter, issue 9, july 2001... k...fine, not the newsletter type... lets see press release.. those are ALWAYS important and must be updated because it feature the *upside*.
Third Consecutive Successful LinuxWorld as Linux Certification Sponsor. OXFORD, MS (Sept. 24, 2001)
it just seem to be rolled into netg curriculum into a course roadmap for linux training, rather than certification.
from all the info gather plus some quick search from other sites which confirm the facts gathered from its official site, it seem clear to me that SAIR is not a good path to chose for certification purpose. |
