The version of linux that runs off the CD and doesn't need the hard drive is called Knoppix.

Download it free from the Internet!
www.knoppix.com

Then burn the .iso image to a CD.

Insert and boot off the CD.

Press enter or just wait for it to load the defaults.

The image contains about 2GB of files compressed. The Open office program will open word documents.

I have a Knoppix Cd handy because I can boot a machine up to it and copy files off the HD and onto the Internet if the Windows OS is totally shot.

That's a good one. My kids love it for the games.

There is another one called Peanut Linux that runs entirely off a floppy.

I find Knoppix makes a great "rescue disk" as well.
