| 1. Perfomance-wise, whats Linux Servers advantages over Windows server. Lets say, I am in an organization with 1000 users, do you think I can install One dns or One DHCP server on 128mb of ram, PII to support these users? How will this perform? I am asking this to basically check performance.
2. In Red Hat 9, where they ask to install Gui and other features During installation. If I choose not to install the GUI or the other features, Im I able to install it later even if Im in a Command type Mode?
3. If I choose to install Linux as a workstation, can I Convert as a Server Later?
4. I am not trying to become a linux expert. When can I say at an interview, "I am competent using Linux". What exactly should I focus on when trying to learn linux?
I have a few more, but can't think of any for some reason,
Thanks a lot in advance guys.

| 1. That will be fine for a Linux server. Linux doesn't require a lot of umph to work good. A lot of people use that old Pentium or even 486 out of their closet and make it a router or even a desktop system (you don't want to use X with that, though.)
2. The "GUI" is called XFree86 and yes that can be installed later.
3. There isn't much difference between a Linux workstation and server; it's what installed and what daemons are running. If you are running, say, BIND and DHCP, then it's a "server", if you aren't running any server daemons, then you can call it a workstation.
4. Learn the command line. Anyone can work with GUIs but competent Linux/Unix people are command line experts. When practicing, configure config files manually, wthout GUI help and work from the shell.

| thanks Boulware5, I appreciate your detailed response.
So, do you suggest learning to set up and configure DNS, DHCP, FTP, SSH servers on the shell in order to be considered competent linux user?
Can a person confidently say, "I am competent using linux after setting up these servers you think?

| another question Boulware5. I am impressed with the fact that one linux server runs great to support 1000 users, whats the max # of users you think the Linux server running, DHCP, DNS, FTP etc before you start to see bad performance?
How about a windows server? how many users do one windows server running dns, dhcp etc, before you start to see it slow down?
Thats a Major weekness I have, and I dont know too much about. KNOWING ABOUT PERFORMANCE IN A NETWORK, THATS WHY I ALSO DECIDED TO ASKED THAT QUESTION. |
