| I want to install another email exchange system in Red Hat Linux, so my questions are:
1) what is this software's name?
2) Are there any anti-virus and anti-spam software for this email exchange system?
3) Can I transfer the Microsoft Exchange 2000 server mailbox to the new Linux one?
4) the most important, are these all software free?
Thank you! | |

| There isn't really a decent exchange clone available yet. If you are after something
as a mail server there are many options like Sendmail or Qmail - these are lacking in some areas such as callendar etc.
I did hear of a few projects on exchange type stuff, but can not remember the names.
If you are after something like Outlook - try Kmail (not bad for POP3/IMAP) or Ximans Evolution (a bit podgy, but has many outlook type features and I think works with exchange server.
I am certain that there are many more out there.

There are, but they are spendy.
The commercial ones I know of are:
IBM - Lotus Notes/Domino
SuSE - OpenExchange Server 4 { this received rave reviews - it will integrate with an Exchange server enviorment also - it starts out at $1,250.00 though }
Oracle - Oracle Colaberation Suite
Open Source - OpenGroupware from OpenGroupware.org / works with Open Office [free download]
There are many open source others available. These seem to be the major players currently, of the commercial stuff.
I downloaded OpenGroupware but haven't had the time to install it yet. It sounds promising.

| I thought every application software in Linux platform is free. So I doubt their real value if they charge the same money.
RussS:
Yes, our client compuer use the Outlook, you mean in this way, we can install the Kmail or Ximans Evolution in the Linux Server as a backup and our OUTLOOK can access in them in case of our Exchange 2000 server crashed?

NOPE !
The "Source Code" must be availably free for distribution & change. They don't have to supply the complete compiled application/ programs/ ISO's/ tarballs/ etc... Just the source code.
So if you want to figure out which source code packages & all their dependancies you need, you can assemble it on your own. It's usually more of a pain than its worth.
The problem with integration anything with M$ Exchange is, it's set up not to work with anything but M$. There are work arounds to many, but a work around is a work around & not a full integration.
SuSE says they have solved that roadblock with OpenExchange Server 4 . I don't personally know this. This is just what the reviews say.
I've yet to see an Open Source freebie that matches the functionality of M$ Exchange Server. If it is out there, I haven't heard of or seen it yet.

1. sendmail or qmail should work fine.
2. Anti-Virus software not needed, spamassasin works fine for killing spam.
3. You can write a program that would make short work of it, but I don't know of any currently available.
4. Yes. | |

Sorry - Thought they were parameters
Here's a line item answer then
[answer 1 opengroupware]
- Incorrect -
OpenGroupware Is a "colaboration suite" that needs to run on a server & IS NOT an E-mail Server itself. It also works best when Open Office is installed also.
These are your e-mail servers that will load into your existing Redhat Linux server install.
[ Kmail - Qmail - Sendmail - Ximans Evolution - etc....]
[answer 2. no]
- Incorrect -
Clam Antivirus / Open Antivirus / Spam Assisn - there are others....
[answer 3. no]
- Currently correct -
There is a utility in PHP in it's Beta stage - but I'm not mentioning it's name because it doesn't completely work right yet /// And I've tried another that is more hassle's than it's worth
[answer 4 yes ]
- Correct -
There is the free version & the commercial version just like Open Office / Star Office |
