Congrats on passing your exams! What books or other materials did you use? How much real world experience do you have and how much of a lab did you have to experiement with in your preperation?

Good job!

Can you give us a little review of how the tests were and what materials you used to prepare for it?

Thanks!

Sorry I didn't login to examnotes for a while Ok friends the LPI exams are great exams and a good preparation for RHCE, first of all I used some guides from unixreview site really I didn't benefit from them the best text book I found is "LPI Linux Certification In A Nutshell"! you may say Oh; but this text book is old for release one I thought the same with my first exam but believe me it is a great book for the exam you need just to reorganize the material in the book and add the new topics I will discus these later, for now you must know for LPI level one there are two exams:
117-101 (RPM or DPKG) LPI 101 level1 (you choose here between RPM or dpkg for me it is RPM )
This is a trivial exam? No and Yes!! Believe me I founded this exam harder than 102! Why? Because it focuses on small things pay attention for FHS here and use "Jeffrey Dean" book believe me his book is dedicated for the exam. You must know RPM very will.

117-102 LPI 102 level2
This is a nice exam use Jeffrey Dean book and you need to search the internet for information for new objectives not covered in Dean book like Open SSH, you must focus on Networking and Services here.
Searching LinuxJournal and LinuxMagazine sites you will find nice articles clearer than HOWTOS try it and you will see

What you will not find in Dean book:

101 exam:
I will post it next time.

102 exam:
* Topic 106
- GRUB

* Topic 112
- routed/gated

* Topic 113
- Open SSH

* Topic 114
- iptables

I can't say more that’s what I can help you with just general description and I encourage you to focus on Linux and LPI as a road towards the RHCE I can't say anything about exam questions; just study and enjoy and remember finding information about Linux is part of the exams and a nice thing you will learn with Linux you will find it hard but you will feel the difference this is Linux "Be Yourself, Help Yourself, Share the Joy"

I will try to post some links that can help you in your studying soon
Good Luck

Thank you ...
Books I used:
- Jeffrey Dean book "LPI LINUX CERTIFICATION IN A NUTSHELL" (Good one)

- "LPI I&II EXAM CRAM" this is free and you can get it from the internet (but don’t waste your time with!)

Other material:
LinuxJournal Site
LinuxMagazine Site
Linux Documentation Project HOWTOs
RedHat site

My experience with Linux is about 7 months.

About the lab:
You need just a Linux machine with real modem or external modem not winmodem.
but I also have a windows machine both machines connected peer_to_peer as a one network I used that to experiment with Samba and DHCP and other network related issues and for both machines I use a kvm switch so I use my screen/mouse/keyboard for both machines and switch between them by the kvm switch this can save you money and space.

I hope that answers your questions.

Good Luck
