Within the last couple of months I have acquired 2 extra hard drives from work (for educational purposes of course!) And I decided to install linux and FreeBSD on them since I'm starting to forget the 2 unix/linux courses I've taken. After running x and trying to play on the internet with FreeBSD I got the message that the process for http://www.whatever.com protocol died unexpectedly. For two days now I've been kicking my self and only now after a few drinks did I think about the fact that I didn't specify a DNS Server.Well I was just venting. Maybe I should quit drinking or maybe Drink More. I don't know

if you are setting you ip sraticaly and do not have a DHCP then you need to sepcify the IP address of the DNS at least that is in windows TCP/IP same thing with linux

Yeah,
I set the DNS entry to point to itself. I was planning setting it up as a DNS server. I installed the os and turned it off. The next day I wanted to check my e-mail from work and that's when I saw my error. The terminology through me off. Protocal died?

Well you don't HAVE to set an address to a DNS server or to a server that redirects your requests. You could just memorize IP addresses and use those if you really wanna have fun.
