| Yesterday this guy I know was telling me about knoppix. The linux that can run right off the cd even on a windows system. I was looking at screen shots and looking at a couple different sites on it. I was wondering if any of you have every used knoppix and what your thoughts on it were?
Thanks | |

| In my opinion it would only be good for someone used to windows and just wants to try out Linux to see what it's like without having to create room for it on a hard drive. If you want to learn Linux, do it the real way... That's my 2... | |

| I find knoppix an excellent program and expecially good for use on a laptop where you may not have the space or desire for a dual boot or a removeable hard drive. My only concern with knoppix is that I never did figure out how to work as root. Since Linux+ is largely oriented towards system administration, much of this kind of work cannot be done without root privileges. Still, knoppix is very useful as you start into Linux. I think you will want or need to do a dedicated or dual boot system as you progress in the Linux/Unix world. | |

| Knoppix is also good if you have a dead OS and need to recover something from the HD or fix something else | |

| Knoppix opens up new paths for Linux to travel.
1. Display kiosks can be loaded to create a demonstration system simply by inserting a CDROM in to the cdrom drive.
2. college students learning Linux can take home a Knoppix cdrom and practice their commands and become familiar with the Linux OS without going through the install process.
3. Knoppix makes an excellent recovery utility, and has found it's way in to my troubleshooting binder.
4. The best one I think is, it gets Linux in places where it was not at. When you can simply take a polished Linux OS and put it on a friends system and have them use it without breaking their own Windows system, it increases the spread of Linux.
Other projects have begun that allow a customized LIVE cdrom Linux OS. I believe it is called Morphix. The compression technology alone is awesome. 2Gig worth of software in addition to a complete OS and X environments on one 650MB CDROM. That is some good stuff. | |

| Knoppix is awesome, SLackware has a version you can run off of the cd also, but I think you have to buy it.
It is just nice to get your buddies on Linux and this is an easy entry to use on them. |
