What level of C programming? If you haven't done any C programming then consider one of the beginner books like Sams, Learn C in 24 hours, or Learn C in a weekend. Perhaps a trip to a bookstore like Barnes and Noble and surf the beginning C books.

Have you considered a C class at a Community College? These classes are often relatively inexpensive and you benefit by having an experienced instructor.

There are also several UNIX/Linux system Admin books. You might consider a Linux+ book (like Sybex or Bible series) to get a good ideal of Linux overall and of Linux Administration.
