well my friends, I am back in Linux Hell.

I have been trying to install Linux on an IBM THinkpad laptop. I don't even want X to run, I just want to use it as a troubleshooting machine.

It is an IBM 365XD. Granted, it is not a fast box, but hey, we're talking CLI linux, here, so I can't imagine that it's not good enough.

When I try to install RH 7.3, it does half way through the install. Every time. I u sed the same CD to install RH on another machine successfully.

I was successful in installing Mandrake 6.0 - had an old CD Rom kicking around - but then it won't recognize the D-Link DWL-650 wireless card that I want to use on it. I downloaded the latest drivers and the needed PCMCIA update, but no go. It toasted the box.

That, my friends, is what I call a pain in the @$$

try one of the minimalist distributions linux.org/dist/list.html

I bet FreeBSD would load w/o any trouble

Btw, consider getting a better wireless card. D-Links aren't so great when it comes to range.

I would love to try BSD. Any distro you recommend in my case?

As for the card, I already have it, and it will fit the bill since it will sit about 5 feet from the AP. I just want to ssh into the thing and run commands from there

FreeBSD's what I'd recommend starting out with. You can download 4.7 here:

ftp://ftp2.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/....7/4.7-mini.iso

If I recall correctly D-Link's cards are based on a Prism chipset, so you'll need to recompile the kernel, to enable support. It's not too hard to do that though - just edit a config file, make build, and make install.

I am too busy right now with many projects coming up. I would say probably some time in April at this stage...

My voucher (which I got a while back for a great buy on ebay) expires this September. So I got plenty of time myself.

I wish I had more time to take tests, but life is hectic right now. I am not complaining, mind you. It is hectic for all the good reasons

Dave I had the same problem trying to install RH 7.3 on my Thinkpad. I actually had much better luck installing 8.0. It went on without a hitch and ran great.

IBM Developerworks has some mini tutorials addressing this issue on notebooks that are free downloads.

I don't have the URL to this specific file. I just remember seeing it when downloading some other Linux stuff a few days ago.

I also read something on Linuxiso.org about one of the distros. that was compiled with laptops specifically in mind. It was in the product description for that specific ISO image. I don't remember which one.

Might be worth a quick scan.
