Hi I'm new to Linux

I have some problem with disk space

At the time install i have created the partition for linux as bel

/ 1.5 GB
/UR 1.2 GB
SWAP 200 MB (FOR 128 MB RAM)

now I have found from du -h

/ 12% use
/usr 100% use

& I can't install more packages receiving the message there is no

enough disk space

My question is why / (root) partion can not be utilised to install

packages?

Should I have to reinstall again and format the p.table?

what should be best option for allocation of disk space (if 3 Gb is

total disk space) at the time of installation ??

thanks

I know there is a linux program called "parted" which can resize partitions, but I have never used as I am afraid of trashing my system. Have no clue why / cannot be used for anything other than mounting stuff on. Myabe Boulware or Papiya will be back soon and enlighten us.

Well obviously the stuff you are trying to install wants to be in /usr. 3GB is very small if you want to install Linux apps. Your swap partition is too small because of this. Your swap should be at least 2x the amount of ram. If I were you I would invest in a bigger hard-drive. They are not that expensive nowadays.

I have a dual boot system running Windows XP and redhat Linux and my drive is only 14 gigs. If you wanna install linux on a 3 gig partition size, you wont be able to install any graphical interfaces most likely, as the apps will take up most of that. if you have a lot of ram swap size is not crucial, and if you make it too big it could actually reduce performance from excessive paging. / can be very small, but /usr is typically where most of your applications and docs are stored so it needs to be pretty large. what kind of machine are you using this for? its use will determine the sizes of the parititions.
