Author network access
me? I dunno...

it seems to me that for some reason linux is scared to death of allowing the user to control the network interface? I thought open at all times whether you like it or not was supposed to be taboo?

same thing in redhat or mandrake, I configure nic to connect at boot, stay connected at all times, network access is good. No sooner do I remove the 'start at boot' or 'connect at boot' option then the darn thing wont connect at all... in redhat even partially freezes the start menu.

I know its probably just a newby thing but it sure is frustrating.

when you say 'user', do you mean a regular user or the root user? normal users shouldnt be able to edit things like this.

what commands are you using exactly? if you want netowrk access to stay on at all times, you can easily configure this.

I mean regular user, its not like I am attempting to circumvnet restricted acces to the network (internet), its just that it would be nice to allow myself to connect and disconnect without switching to root. this from the perspective of a pc accessing the internet rather than a member of a private network

also, I must admit that I still go for the gui first, I understand that must change.
