me? I dunno...

I get a gui error message

'Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying "/etc/lilo.conf.anaconda"

I have managed to unpack and install software but I'm not sure what the best viewer option would be. I am guessing I would just download it from one of the linux sites and then install?

suggestions?

I can look at the file by typing view /etc/lilo.conf.anaconda also viM appears to be functional and does open from a command line

is gedit installed properly? nautilus will by default try to open files with gedit, which is the default editor for gnome. this error should only occur if you start gnome, though.

I've looked all the way from gnibbles to gnupg, no sign

actually, there is a gedit-2 under /user/share, oh well no biggy, it will come up again eventually...

Look on your Linux cds and install gedit . . . it should have been installed by default. or you can change the default file viewer for gnome in the control center i think.
