well maybe not as old as me but i have an old 286 zenix or xenix or however you spell it machine. i dont know anything about it. i need to pull the data off of it. does anyone know where i can start? like how do i find out what kind and version of OS it is running? how do i find out what file types are on it. is there a way to convert the files on it so i can work with them in dos? anyway im just at a loss and would like some pointers on where to start with this thing. maybe how to pull files onto a floppy would be a good start. THX in advance guys.

XENIX is an old Microsoft version of UNIX. Current versions of Linux can have XENIX file support built into them, but you will usually need to rebuild the kernel to get this support. I suggest saving the files you want tape or floppy and then loading them onto a Linux machine with XENIX fs support enabled. Then you can get the files and save them however you want them. The tar command or cpio should work fine to save the files to tape.

While basically correct Xenix has a varied history. Remember SCO had it after Microsoft lost interest as DOS/OS2 grew in popularity. SCO did the primary port to Intel and so was the logical choice to sell to, MS I think got a quarter of SCO in the deal. Microsoft never really sold Xenix retail and it always had someone elses name on it.

So he could even have a hybrid or SCO Xenix-286 or SCO Xenix-386. If it is a SCO version he may be able to find an old Irwin floppy based tape and move things directly to windows. Irwin tapes were also used under windows and OS/2 and he may be able to find or borrow one. Here is a xenix driver

a pointer to the xenix faq

here are some typical driver manuals in PDF for the SCO flavor.

Thx for the input but i need something even more basic. Like maybe a site with basic commands? also i dont think there is enough data on the machine to warrant the use of a tape. Maybe just a few floppies worth. I'm sorry i dont know any commands so im pretty much useless with this thing.
anybody have any clues on a site that would give me basic commands like how to format a floppy, copy files to and from a floppy? i think once i get it off the machine there has to be some program out there that would convert the files to something i can work with.

Is there anywhere I can find a copy of Xenix? I looked for it before but due my short attention span I ended up looking at porn instead. Anyways, I thought it would be kinda cool to install Xenix on virtual machine using VMware.

Contact SCO. I think they oringinally licensed it and some versions of SCO UNIX were based on XENIX.
