Author difficulty opening apps
me? I dunno...

I have had the computer to the point where I could connect to the web but now it seems that I have a permissions type problem.

when I try to open mozilla or anything else, the hourglass just spins around and then fizzles. Isnt this the response linux gives to inadequate access rights?

I have created a user profile in mozilla and in network properties in addition to the standard user account I created during installation, it is not a root account, but no avail.

it seems like I have good access when I initially login but a systematic process of denial ensues and results in an inability to open anything or do anything whatsoever using the gui, I cant even open a terminal.

upon reboot, I have access to everything again and once I start doing things the gui systematically begins to remove access to my desktop links.

I was messing around trying to (and did) install j2re and the later sd2k and I did make an alteration to a PATH file, maybe why? oddly enough, ]java -version shows that I have it installed but it has yet failed to work.

reinstall...

Can you run programs from the command line? Try running Mozilla from the command line in X and see what happens - that is if you can even get a terminal window up.

I can get around just fine until I activate the ethernet adapter, up until that point mozilla will open, command line, pretty well anything I like, but the instant the adapter get activated everything quits working.

I had it up and running before, surfing &c. and downloading also. I have reloaded the o/s, chosen new partition and allowed the auto partition thing to do what it wanted.

I keep thinking this has something to do with installing java...

I wonder if the auto install left some of the previous config in place?

computer has an onboard nic as well pci, I uninstalled both of them, reinstalled one, changed the user password, enabled 'common' from profile dialogue box, saved changes, and viola, something changed and the problem went away.

maybe fix from command line next time...

now try java again

oh, and plug some holes
