Are you hooked on FreeBSD yet?

It is very nice. I love the ports system, cvsup, etc. FreeBSD is easier to use than Linux once you get used to it I think. I am part of the FreeBSD questions mailing list so if I have any questions.... They seem to be real helpful and knowledgeable.

I think you just listed most of the reasons that I prefer the BSDs :-) Being source centric really makes a lot of tasks more straight forward. Have you tried doing a make world yet?

Haven't done a make world yet. That's just to update the entire system right? I think I will reinstall because I'm swaping in another mobo and CPU and want to make sure everything is kosher. Do you recommend 4.9 or 5.1?

make world recompiles the entire base system, minus the kernel. The cool thing about that is if some new vulnerability is discovered, all you have to do is install a single patch, then do a make world to instead of having to track down which applications need to be patched. It's a huge time and bandwidth saver. This is also how you'd update the OS if you're tracking the -current or -stable branch through CVS.

I'm a little torn on which version to recommend for learning the OS. For a production server, I wouldn't hesitate to say 4.9, but for learning, going with 5.1 may be better in the long run. Just keep in mind that 5.x isn't nearly as refined as 4.x at this point.

So if I have 4.9 and 4.10 comes out, a make world would upgrade me to 4.10? And when you say the entire base system, is that all ports? I upgraded my ports with the ports supfile cvs and then I did a portupgrade -ar (which took a LOOOONG time). Now if make world updates the ports system too, whats the difference between that and portupgrade?

Yeah, just cvsup up to 4.10, make world, build a new kernel and reboot

make world doesn't apply to ports, so you'd still need to run portupgrade, or whatever you use to keep the ports up to date.

Ah I see. Not sure if I will go with 4.9 again or 5.1 when I reinstall. 5.1 has some nice features like devfs for device nodes.

BTW wasn't this supposed to be a post your desktop thread - what happened?

Yeah, power cuts suck, don't they? In Kol, we get them all the time, unlike you guys in Florida. :/

If you don't use X is there a way to adjust the resolution of your screen. I can't just boot into the CLI because everything is too big.

Change the vga= configuration option in your lilo.conf file.

what if I used grub?
Papiya

Try looking at some of your boot configuration options in the /boot partition. There are usually some files there that allow you to configure certain options like font size.

Or you could just switch to lilo.

Thanks again. Eventually I'll switch over to lilo but grub is the default and while I'm getting used to it I figured I'd try not to hurt myself...
