I am taking a Linux+ class and we are using Red Hat 7.2 for labs. I am having difficulty getting the graphical interface to install. It is not recognizing my Dell M991 monitor or NiVidia Quadro4 700XGL video card. Checked the Red Hat HCL but was not helpful.

What emulates these in 7.2 so I can get the X windows to install?

Linux 7.2 is old. Why not just use the newest version as your hardware is more likely to be supported? Also, you can choose the text mode install . . . just type "text" at the prompt and hit enter. You don't really need to install X at all unless you are using it as a desktop. You could try using the Generic SVGA Server or SVGA_16 Serber if your precise card isn't supported. it might not be the optimal solution, but it could get you a running GUI. Also check the X web site to see if your hardware is suported.

Yeah, I know 7.2 is not the latest and greatest, but I was trying to stick to what was loaded in the class lab. I did try the SVGA option and still not loading the GUI. Right now I can get by without the GUI for labs but a few chapters ahead... probably next week. We will be doing some stuff with the Graphical portion.

Suggestions on the best and safest place to download a newer version of RedHat?

What kind of assignments will you have with the GUI? The main thing I would think would be configuring and seting up X, and Red Hat tries to do that automatically. To download some recent Linux distros try this site:

There is little difference between 7.2 and 9.0, certainly nothing that should cause you difficulty in the class, but newer versions do tend to have better hardware support for older hardware, so getting the newest version could only help you.

In the meantime, you could just do the text mode install.

Good luck.

You can by yourself judge if your system's display card is support or if the failure is something to do with your that installation being malconfigured system install , weather it really could be possible to install GUI with 7.2 on that same system or not...

You need to be analytic and a little bit or reasoning for that purpose...

To know more ask for me...
