Linux+ - Hard or easy like other CompTIA certs?
|
|
|
| I'm currently A+, Network+ and i-Net+ certified and am looking at going down the Linux path as I'm currently an admin for several Linux web servers.
I was wondering if anyone has experience with the Linux+ exam? Is it very hard? I would like to get Linux+ and move on to either RHCE or LPI certifications...

| The Linux+ exam was the easiest exam that I have ever taken. When I took it (over a year ago), about 25% of the questions were hardware related and had little to do directly with Linux. So review your A+ material, especially about drives. Other than that, focus mainly on using the command line, basic linux utiltities (cat /etc/passwd | sort | grep -v root), a handful of system administration commands (useradd, init, etc.), the package management systems (deb and rpm) and in some networking commands (netstat, traceroute, route, etc.). Know what directories are used for what kinds of files and basic stuff like that. you can make educated guesses on lots of the answers as long as you know the "unix mindset". A very basic test, tests you on the knowledge of your Linus basics. I wouldn't bother with the X Window system as I had no questions involving it. Know a little basic security. No apps were really discussed (Apache, sendmail, etc.). Nothing "complicated" like patching systems or recompiling kernels, although this is relativley simple as well. But if you have a decent knowledge of Unix, this test should be a breeze. Just watch out for the hardware side, as that kind of blindsided me.
Let me know if I can be of further help.

| Good call, Papiya. That's an excellent description of the Linux+ exam.
Grab a discount voucher over at www.ExamVouchers.com and they include an excellent Linux+ study guide that pinpoints the Linux+ exam very well. | |

| Linux+ was the easiest exam I have taken. At certificationcorner.com they had a GREAT pdf review that was right on for this exam, but unfortunately I got some bad news and it seems to be down. The link was http://www.certificationcorner.com/linux+_SC.pdf | |

| I thought the exam was fairly straightforward but unlike the others, I had few hardware questions. My score, however, was lower than any of the other CompTIA exams expect for Server+ (which I thought was poorly written). The exam was largely command-line and included a fair amount of system admin stuff. I have been looking at LPI and it appears it is much like Linux+. |
