I'm not very good at linux

I'm using rh 7.1

The rh pc is connected to network and I'm able to use internet through LAN . MY gatway is My XP pro box which is connected to a USB ADSL ALCATEL modem connected to phoneline.

Question is there a way to get the XP pc see the linux PC and visa versa.

I have heard you need Samba but I'm unsure how to configure or even install.

I have had problem using RPM and I'm never sure wether what I have downloaded has ever been installed.

Using KDE control center under search samba results show KDE IOSlaves
Samba Status
Window shares.

I click on Samba Status but get an error unable to run samba status.

Also see smewhere that only client samba working and not server samba.

getting a bit lost now.

Yeah, whenever you have Windowz and *nix machines on your network and you want them to see and talk to each other, you will need Samba.

Here's a good tutorial:

Last night I used RH update agent and downloaded basically every thing select all button quite a few hours. Everything was installed except LILO cos of some error. well I have win98 and Mandrake that boot from GRUB. RH I boot from floppy so that is probably why error.

I have not looked at links yet you supplied Boulware5 but I will one I posted this.

question for samba to work dose windows need to be using NETBIOS? can you also use TCP/IP at the same time as NETBIOS.?

Probaly some answers in link you spplied thanks

Ok...

It is simpler to use TCP/IP for Samba. You certainly don't have to use NetBEUI. In fact, you'd need a third-party addon and it's a lot more involved. So definately use TCP/IP.
