Author Always admired Linux, but...

...I seem to have really bad luck with it.

I'm really not stupid, used to be a UNIX systems administrator. But everytime I install Linux, something goes majorly wrong.

This time, installed to the secondary HDD of my server, now when I boot, nothing but "01 01 01...".

Serves me right for trying it on my server. Probably no hope of recovering my primary, huh?

'Sokay...fdisk /mbr fixed it.

get another box, like p200, or p2 266 etc. those cost like 50 bucks prolly, can't imagine it costing more.

you can mess with , nuke it and it won't hurt.

if you dont' have a kvm, it won't even be a problem, just telnet into it to play.

Yeah, it was really dumb to use my server. Have a K6-2 333 I'll use next time.

Shewolf what version are you using. I had a hell of a time with RH 7.3 Then I got my hands on RH 8.0 and what a difference. I'm running it on a dual boot with w2k server. I just popped in the disks, adjusted my partition sizes and that was it. I even installed it on my ThinkPad T-21.

Hate to admit it, but the newest version I have is 6.0. Thinking about putting it on my Pentium 90 laptop, since I don't care what happens to it. Had a VERY bad experience with 6.2, hosed a system so bad I had to do a low-level format.

I've always told people what a great OS this is...I guess it just doesn't like blondes!

I wasn't that impressed with v.6.anything . Try 7.3 or 8.0. You will have a much better time with everything involved.

Agreed. Version 6.x is obsolete.

Well, since I am out-of-work, purchasing a new copy of anything is not possible.

Guess I just won't be installing LINUX. Thanks for your help.

It's always been free. If you don't have good connection, check out this place.

Just about anything open source you'd need @ $0.99 a disk plus S&H. Could pick up the whole RH 8 cd set for $12.50 with shipping. Less if you don't want to source.

It's a free download from several places.
Use a download manager & set it to download when you aren't using your puter. It may take a while but it gets the job done. I do it all the time on a 56K dial up.

Yeah, the problem is I'm on dial-up, thanks, I'll try that one. I KNOW it's free, but thought it would take DAYS with dial-up.

Now that I've checked, I see it will take days...3 and a half, to be specific.

Oh well, no pain no gain.

Go to library, get a Linux book, and install it from the CD.

Yep !

Pay the price or be patient with a slow as molasses download. That's what download managers are for. I do this all the time on a 56K dial up. The ecomomy in my area is deplorable. I'm unemployed more than I'm employed recently. I have to do this. I can't afford all the $5 & $10 expendatures I would normally be paying out for this stuff either.
You do what you have to, to get by.
marathoner offered to mail you a copy.
