Wondering about LINUX+

| Hello fellow techies. I have a mild quandry that I wish some feedback on. The quandry obviously is in regards to preparing and taking the LINUX+ cert exam. I have done some intern/outsourced work for Bell LAbs (now Lucent) and have a pretty extensive knowledge of UNIX. I wouldn't say I am the # 1 UNIX guru but I feel safe in the arms of UNIX, unlike the cold grip of Microsoft's Blue Screen. KSh,SED,VI,GREP,AWK... gotta love those man(1) pages!
Anyway, on to my question. What (if any) material out there is good to prepare for the exam? Secondly, I have Knopix and partitioned one of my drives for Red Hat which one is better overall and serves as a environment that will allow safer passage through the torrent of studying for the exam. Any help, advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...

| You need to be familiar with Red Hat and Debian package management systems for the exam, so try to get used to both of them. Review your hardware concepts, since the exam goes very heavily on that area. Apart from that, it sounds like you are already 90% ready. Know your basic commands, I/O redirection, vi, file system layout, how to read log files and so on, and that should do it for you. Freak has a cheap guide that you could use, Roderick Smith also has a good book published by Sybex that is cool. Your main concern should be the hardware though, as they throw a lot of A+ type questions at you in this exam. | |

| Hi,
You have got experience on UNIX. Why don't you take the LPI 1 & 2 Exam or Solaris?
Linux+ is an entry level cert on Linux.

| Thanks for the info.
Eventhough LINUX+ is entry level I'll do it just to pad the resume and play with linux for a bit without it being a seemingly daunting task. Thanks for the directional persuasion towards Solaris and LPI 1 & 2 Ian. I'll look into them. As for Mr. Linux thank you for the overview of the LINUX + exam. I will heed your suggestion and look into Red Hat, Debian and A+ like questions. Thanks again.

| I would pick up some type of review book and make sure that you apply the main themes for CLI commands (permissions, strings, directoris, subdirectories). I played with Red Hat 8.0 in my home lab. See my earlier post also as I prepared for/passed this exam. Good luck - even though it is entry-level, it will look good on your resume against the 90% Windows crowd that could not login to Linux. |
