I'd suggest using Linux for a while before thinking about getting a cert in it. Red Hat and Mandrake would both be great choices for starting out.

Before attempting certification, try to use at lest one Red-Hat-type distro (Mandrake, Caldera, SuSE, Red Hat, etc.) and Debian. Slackware is also good because you tend to learn more from it. But the more general tests will ask you about package management, which are different on the distros that use RPMs and those that use the DEB packages.

Any suggested reading for slackware distro? Or would a generalized book suffice?

Might want to get "Slackware Unleashed" or something like that, as most books tend to focus on Red Hat-type distros nowadays. Slack uses its own package management system that differs from most other distros. The installer is more BSDish as well.

How about a dual boot between Linux and FreeBSD?

any conflicts with that?

Another question which do you prefer KDE or GNOME? I know its about personal prefrences but opinions never hurt.

I like KDE better. I can't stand GNOME, never could. You can dual boot Slack and FreeBSD with no problems, as I have done so before.
