| haha,
its neat to see commercial linux entites crash and burn...
or try to be even more commercial and struggle with GNU...
pretty soon, the open source snobs/zealots won't have much to say about MS and other commercial software companies who understand what make the world turn.

I don't think any of the larger players, like Red Hat or FreeBSD are going anywhere.

| how do one beat MS and others in its own game... without turning themselves into the devil...
how do you castrate commercial entities... when you need to be one to generate revenue, market share etc to continue the fight...
mandrake was relatively big... it gain recognition with its bundled pc to such large retail like walmart. like it or not, it helped get linux in the news... more of the *oh my! MS is going down because so and so is now carrying linux along with MS loaded systems!*
the concensus in this forum is also mandrake is the newbie's linux... it help get cautious users into the field... without it... what do you have? retracted market share because linux revert back to the arcane...
I always find the fight of opensource interesting... the fight of david and goliath... how do one gain strength... without the same fuel and distaste that enpowers the enemy and still retain their purity..

I disagree with this. It may have been true at one time, but no longer. Mandrake is great for GUNbies. So is Red Hat, SuSE, Caldera, et. al. They are now much easier to install than Windows. And although Mandrake is well-loved for its ease for beginners, if you are using Linux for any length of time, you will have to get into some "arcane stuff" at some point. If you don't like that, Linux is not for you.
Personally, I think they need to stick to offering support instead of trying to cash in on the software itself. It's dumb to me, as no sooner than they will come out with a proprietary product than some developers will get pissed and write an opern source alternative. Open Source plays by different rules; it's best not to try toget around them as I don't think that will be very prodcutive. The last company who tried this was Caldera. Haven't heard much from them since.

Mandrake tried to expand into too many markets too fast. That was a big business mistake IMO that didn't have much to do with the product's money making potential.

I use to recommend Mandrake to newbies, but ever since RH 7.3 came out I've been recommending RH.

I think the nature of this open source world is such that no one company will emerge as Goliath. Red Hat's present market share is probably close to the max that any one company could hope to achieve - mostly because the barriers to entry in this market are so low.
