| Being relatilvely new to the *nix side of computing, I think i need some advice from the gurus in this forum. I have an old pentium 2 box that i would like to set up using linux to mess around with and get my hands dirty. Colleagues of mine tell me to install Redhat. But, isnt Redhat primarily a server OS. What do you guys think I should do? Redhat, or a different distro? I would like to use a distro with all the goodies(ie. games, development, everything) and eventually once comfortable to set up server functionality. I know I ask a lot, but doesnt linux deliver a lot?
Thanks in advance for your advice,

| For a desktop OS, I'd recommend Mandrake Linux 8.2. For one, it installs easily and painlessly. The other reason it's GUI is relatively easy to pick up and of course there is the available command shell.
You can download Mandrake Linux for free here: http://www.linux-download-cds.com.
I have heard RH makes a very good Linux server platform though I haven't tried the latest releases. My only experiences with RH were with earlier versions such as 5.1 and 6.2, both imho, aren't very good desktop OS because of the difficulty of installing them and the dearth of device drivers back then. | |

| That's pretty much what I've heard in terms of easiest Linux OS to setup. Either Mandrake or SuSE. I'm already plumbing around with RedHat 7.2 and have recently picked up SuSE 8.0 Pro (don't have a fast internet connection) with all the included niceties such as Star Office, Perl, Apache, Samba, etc etc. |
