Ok, heres how it is.

I'm 20 years old and have screwed up in terms of education with only GCSE's against my name.

I'm a web designer/administrator and my company uses linux for there web servers, I do a lot of setup and playing with conf files. I have succesfully set up a few linux machines with samba conectivity and X. I know my way around the shell but i'm still really a newbie with decent basic computer skills.

My question is, what is the best exam for me? I'm thinking of doing the LPI 101 & 102 exams after a bit of study and then progressing onto the 201, 202 and beyond. Are there any alternatives, what is this linux+ exam. basically, can someone please give me a bit of guidance, i just want to make the academic leap from basic linux user to compitent/confident user with the ultimate goal of becomming confident and educated enough to call myself a linux administrator.

Any tips on where to study for the 101 / 102 exams would be gratefully appreciated too.

Thankyou
Supertech

Here's a good link for all certs. Linux (LPI,SAIR,Linux+,etc)

http://www.unixreview.com/certify/

Good study guides from Crammsession

http://studyguides.cramsession.com/...nix/default.asp

I'm sure we can dig up some more but that should get you started.

Thanks, thats great, I'll be sure to check out those links in detail, after briefly skimming through it appears that linux+ is a very simple 'starter' course. Do you think I should bother with this one, or shall I move straight to the LPI 101/102 course?

Which one is respected the most in the real world?

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i think Linux+ = LPI 101/102 i think LPI 101/102 is just a little bit *harder*. I've read the LPI books and i think their exam objectives are very similar to Linux+ . LPI is supported by IBM and Linux+ is from Comptia so the choice is yours. I personally would get *both* and then probably RHCE or something like that..

Thats great, well, i guess its off to buy a few books and get down to the studying.
I reckon I'll do linux+ this year, then 101/102 early next year. err....wish me luck

Goodluck joe.durbin here's what i used to pass the Linux+ exam: Linux+ bible, Linux+ All in One guide + boson and that's it you will do fine. Remember to give yourself sometimes to play around with Linux commands.

Just passed Linux+ with 780.

I studied with Sybex's study guide for about 3 months (read 1 time, revise 2 times, sometimes play with my company's Red Hat Linux servers). I also found cheatsheet.net's practice exam. more useful than Boson, Transcender, etc. because cheatsheet.net's questions are very similar to the real exam, whereas Boson's are more simple and Transcender's are more difficult.

a lot of people swear by www.examdrill.com for comptia exams. not sure if it is equally true for their linux+ exam though. worked excellently for my a+ o/s and will likely use it for my network+.

i remember making poor choices with my gces (i think the gces came in a few years later), then did some more at the local technical college. by that time i was 17 and wanted to earn money instead of doing a levels and university.

after working for 16 years as a dtp opperator for a commercial printer i decide to go into it...

best of luck with your linux studies man.

Examdrill doesn't have Linux+ exams - at least not yet. I keep thinking they will have it AFTER I pass my Linux+ exam, LOL.
