I see that there is a Linux+ cert and a LPI cert. Is one better thant the other or are they linked under different names? I'm viewing it as something like two different MCSE certifications. It can't be that way can it? If they are different which one is better/popular i.e. MOST RECOGNIZED IN THE MIS INDUSTRY? Thanks for the feedback!!!!

RHCE is vendor specific, more expensive ($1500 for the exam.) and much more rigorous (Performed in a lab, not a questionaire.) than the two you mention, I would expect that one to be the most reccognized. I think most technical people know who Comp TIA is so Linux+ would seem to be a popular choice.
Comparing MCSE to a Linux cert is diffucult, as there are so many different Linux vendors and one Windows vendor.
So there is at least three different Linux certs that I know of. Most likely a couple more. Your best bet is to get a certificate from either the most recognized vendor or certification authority.

Here's how I see it:

Linux+ - Entry level, vendor neutral cert. Probably the easiest Linux cert because the group behind this cert, CompTIA, says Linux+ helps prepare folks to take the LPI, Red Hat and other Linux exams. Translation: If you are new to Linux, this is a good first cert to obtain before you tackle the more difficult certs.

LPI - Linux Professional Institute is a not-for-profit group that has its own set of Linux exams. I have never taken an LPI exam, but I have heard from friends and co-workers that they are much harder than Linux+, but not as tought as the Red Hat RHCE tests. The benefit of LPI is they are vendor neutral.

RHCE - Right now, the big kahuna of Linux certs. The Red Hat Certified Engineer is the most respected and difficult to obtain of all the Linux certs. Having one of these makes you a true Linux guru.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses. My next step is to figure which route to go now.

it is very simple go for Linux+ first and after that for LPI level1

Well I personally am going for LPI level one. Reason is that I dont have the cash at this time to do RHCE, and also IBM supports LPI, as well as RHCE. If you are already comfortable with Linux, I would suggest LPI. If you have a couple thousand bucks laying around, play with Linux for a while, then fork out the dinero to take the RH300 class and RHCE.

Just my 2 cents... hope it helps!

My theory is everyone's 2 cents help. I have years of experience with UNIX (1999-current) so I'm thinking LPI because it seems more challenging. I don't have the money for RHCE, so LPI will be fine. Well, it's off to the bookstore. Thanks everyone.

If you have years of experience what are you asking for?

Those who can do, those who can't need to ask about getting certs.

Yeah - I'm kind of a jerk, but I know what I'm doing.
