Please, I like anyone to kindly provide me with insights on freebsd install. I was downloading the install files onto a floppy that would enable me to carry out the rest of the install. Half way through a message appears saying the file being copied is too large for the floppy. But it says on the manual for freebsd 4.5 that file can be copied onto a formatted floppy disk from the CD rom. Please, any useful info on how to overcome this nightmare would be greatly appreciated. Cheerio and thanks

See:

http://www.lemis.com/what-to-download.html

and

http://www.lemis.com/install.html

In the latter file, it says:

"If you don't have a CDROM distribution then simply download the installation boot disk image file to your hard drive, being sure to tell your browser to save rather than display the file. Note: This disk image can only be used with 1.44 megabyte 3.5 inch floppy disks."

Although I think it would be easier to boot directly from the CD-ROM. Try this and let us know if it still doesn't work.

Sounds like we're in the same boat. Keep us informed of any developments.

The boot floppies for FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD all take up almost the entire capacity of a floppy disk. If you have any bad sectors that may be causing the problem you're experiencing. Format your floppy disk before attempting to make it into a boot disk. If you have any new floppy disks, try using one of those.

Also make sure you're using an image intended for a 1.44MB floppy and not a 2.8MB one.

"I was downloading the install FILES onto a floppy" hmmmm???

There are two image files needed for FreeBSD, the boot.img and the mfsroot.img - each goes on its own disk. Each image should fit on a 1.44 floppy, make sure you are using the 1.44 img as previously noted.
