Mandrake for me is awesome for a server. RedHat is good for regular desktops

There's very little difference, IMHO.

I have RedHat 7.3 and Mandrake 8.2 instaled
they are very stable distributions
I recommend equally booth of them for a new user who starts to learn linux

Mandrake is based on Red Hat . I prefer Mandrake . I found it easier and had better hardware support than Red Hat.

I have to go along with Mandrake 8.2 for the desktop. Especially with KDE 2.2. It allows you to cut and paste between most programs. Earlier versions of KDE as well as current versions of Gnome do not allow you to do this. I also think Mandrake has the look and feel of Windoze, making it easier for Windows users to migrate over to Linux.

I have never tried using Mandrake for a server, but I have used various versions of Red Hat and find it to be excellent as a web server, file server and print server. I am currently using RH 7.1 as a file server for my home network and it has been running for 166 consecutive days without a reboot. Try to do that with Windows 2000 server!

Debian is also worth considering. The auto update feature is great. You don't have to pay for the update service too :-)

Ooops! Good catch VMS. I wasn't thinking too clearly this morning. I did mean KDE 3, which is even more user-friendly than KDE 2.2

I downloaded the ISO's for RH 7.2 and now 7.3 and I have 2 boxen running Redhat and up2date (the RedHat autoupdate program) works fine for me... I have not had to pay for it either....

you are allowed 1 system update (at a time) without paying... when I need to update my systems I update one then go to RedHat's RHN site and disable the updated one and enable the other system then simply run up2date on the second box...

I have a friend of mine who's over 50 boxes and that's what he does (but he doesn't update all of them)

You're right Myr. I just tried Up2Date on my Red Hat 7.1 box and it works great and didn't ask me for a dime. But I do have a friend who is running RH 7.3 and whenever he tries to update his system, he gets a screen asking him to sign on to the Red Hat network, which I believe costs $9.95 per month (cheap for a company, but expensive for a freelance Linux hacker).

I've noticed that Mandrake has also started a pay update service. I think these pay-for-update service plans will be more common in the future because that is one of the few ways that companies like Red Hat and Mandrake can make money on software that is given away. This is one of the things that I like about Debian is its automatic update service is done by volunteers, and so far, it's free, but who knows how long that will last.

Debian is committed to being 100% GNU/Open Source Linux. I think they will be the best bet in the future (along with Slackware) for a purely free "hacker's Linux".

Actually he does need to sign up with the RHN network which is free... I believe it's rhn_register at the root prompt and it will register you. then you can run the up2date program...

besides if you choose to join the premium rhn network then I believe it starts at like $5 a month...

Mandrake 8.2 has now a similar feature
