What Linux/Unix certs do you plan on persuing?
|
|
| ccieToBe 2002-05-21, 2:54 pm |
| ...or already have and why?
I decided to start preparing for the RHCE exams a couple days ago and don't have any plans to persue any other Linux/Unix certs unless someone decides to create a *BSD certification. I chose RHCE because it seems to be the most respected Unix/Linux cert by far so once I have that, the others would be redundant.

| Oops. Could one of the moderators please change this poll to allow for multiple options to be selected? Thanks. | |
|
| i'm starting with Linux+ afther that don't know .... | |

| Sorry, multiple selections is not an option.
The best I can do is an option for 'more than one'.

| Oh well, thanks for trying. Let's just say if that more then one falls under "other". | |

| I got my Linux+ and will be trying for my LPI-1 after I finish HP-UX. RHCE kind of has me scared. That is a *lot* of money for a guy like me. And then, if you fail . . . eeeek!!! I know that nothing can touch the RHCE in terms of value, but it's still kind of scary for me at the moment. | |

| only 8 votes ???
i guess not that many people in the Unix/Linux forum lately

| Yeah, it is expensive. I look at it this way though - the $750 exam fee is comparable to the cost of taking all the CCNP, MCSE or CNE exams. | |

| You have a point there, but if I fail an MCP exam, it is just a hundred bucks. The RHCE you seem to be taking all of your exams at a whack, and if you fail, you are at a loss of some big money. Eventually I'd like to try for it, but am too chicken just yet. :S | |

| Hey guys and gals this is an interesting thread. Well, I would eventually go for the RHCE route as it's the most difficult and respected of all. Oops! and guess what it's not as easy to pass as MS$ exams, which means quality and that it's worth all the sweat and hassle. Nothing is easy in life, just got to make the effort. Peace Out | |

| I am going for the LPI right now, but dragging rear on this stupid test. I dont feel like I am ready even though I am working with it every day. I also want RHCE, and if any of you guys are former military like me, the VA now will pay for the RHCE test.... good deal huh!

| I didn't know that! That might actually make it reachable for me. I spent eight years in the Navy. | |

| Free software, expensive certification.
Kind of ironic. | |

well not there yet i'm going for L+ for now..
i do have all the Maiginnis books
do you think SAIR will survive?
every were you read they mention LPIC
| neuralfx 2002-06-02, 5:51 am |
| I think Sair will survive .. I dont know a whole lot about LPI, but Sair has some cool stuff, to obtain the highest level its 16tests .. the 2nd level, the LCA, has elective tests that include Apache, MySQL, and PHP .. for those alone I think it is a worthwhile track ..

| WAVE TECHNOLOGIES COMPLETES MAJOR LINUX ACQUISITION
Company acquires Sair Linux & GNU Certification and training group
ST. LOUIS, January 11, 2000-Wave Technologies International, Inc. (Nasdaq: WAVT), a global leader in information technologies certification training and development, continued to chart its path to becoming the leader in Linux training with its announcement today that it executed an agreement Monday to acquire Sair, Inc. (www.linuxcertification.com). Sair develops comprehensive vendor-neutral Linux training materials and is the architect of the Sair Linux & GNU Certification and its associated exams. | yes but that is old news ! 2years old
i think they are going down
| Supertech 2002-06-03, 4:05 pm |
| I only post it to point out that SAIR certifiication is now just a product of Wave. Nothing inovative or new, just another revenue stream for a training company. | |

Yes ... you got a point there!
| neuralfx 2002-06-03, 10:30 pm |
| well i think Sair was innovative, actaully besides RHCE they were the first track of any note for Linux .. yes it was the first .. you might see some rare reference pointing LPI as "first to market" or some such like that .. but for the longest they only had that one LPI level one test .. Sair at least has had the whole admin track done for awhile ..if they are quite late on the rest of it .. LCE tests have been done but don't know about the books .. either way, there is no Cert for Apache or Perl, or MySQL for that matter .. Sair is closest thing to it .. its more challenging than Linux+ which is just another + cert .. ah im just tryin to feel better bout Sair=) they were better when there based in Mississippi

| I have already taken Linux+ & LPI-1. For the time being I am taking a break. I may look at Solaris certs or just brush up on it. Sun seems like a good bet.
As you know IBM is eventually phasing out of AIX and pumping in support dollars into Linux. So AIX is probably out of the question.
I was thinking out pursuing RedHat certs but there is no place where I am at to take the hands on test. If I do pursue that one that will be an expense one. |
