| I have mandrake 7.2 and don't know too much about linux in any shape or form.
just found out that I can't use my modem which is a US robotics PCI winmodem.
I am asuming that an external serial modem would be best.
Have any of you got any suggestions for a modem for my linux box.
I may need help in configureing modem as I have not got a clue.
so I may be back for your expert advice.

| Yeah, an external serial modem's the safest bet. THe important thing's to get a hardware modem. I have an external serial US Robotics V.90 modem. I've only used it a few times though so I can't say much more then it works under FreeBSD. | |

| would you get linux drivers with modem or would mandrake have them installed in its own data base.
Also how would you go about seting up an ASDL modem?
I would love to get my linux box on the net so I could download updates.

| Chances are Mandrake would already have the software for the modem installed and would autodetect it.
Most cable modems are accessed through ethernet NICs so if that's the case it's a matter of setting up one of those which isn't too difficult. Mandrake has a GUI that makes this simple.

| Thats another problem I have mandrake can't see my netgear NIC. Although there are some drivers or program that are on floppy that came with NIC for linux.
I just don't under stand how to install drivers/ program.

| If I have to use a PPP connbection, I always use an external modem. It's less hassle. |
