| Am just being curious to know how many of you out there are a die hard fan of Linux and Unix and most probably how long you've been using these OSes.
Secondly, how long do you think it would take to get a good grip on mastering the use of the OS. Am sure as you all know it's not a point and click OS like MS$. Well at least Linux, FreeBSD and Unix are all a variant of Unix so they are command driven and said to be very stable. Finally, what are your opinions on these pointers and feel to add pointers where I've left valid points out. Cheerio

| UNIX of various types for about 10 years (on and off). Linux 2 years. I use RH Linux exclusively at home. I think to really learn Unux well, you need to use it consistently for about a year. There is just too much to "cram" into a short time. It is kind of like learning a language, you have to be slow and steady to get anywhere with it. The more I do UNIX, the more it seems I like it (kind of like sex ). | |

| How can you be a BSD user for 7 years and a UNIX user for only 6? BSD is a flavour of UNIX. | |

| I'm a die hard *BSD fan. I've been using Linux for two years and *BSD for a year and a half. I've also toyed around a little with Solaris and QNX. The basics of *nix can be picked up in a few weeks but IMO a solid understanding takes years. I'm at the point now where I'm very comfortable with the BSDs but still consider myself to have an intermediate skill set. | |

| Various versions of HP-UX for 7 years.
Various versions of AIX for 5 years.
Sun for about 5 years as well.
Been playing around with Linux and Free BSD for a couple of years now. Like Free BSD better but neither has a place in any enterprise I run except for maybe test servers. Not because I disapprove but managment in most companies I have worked at and for are only interested in HP-UX, AIX or SUN.
I am not a SUN fan by the way. HP-UX is the better OS. LVM blows that crap away that SUN tries to pass off as disk managment and patch management in SUN is terrible. HP-UX's SD-UX is far superior again. Sun has great marketing muscle but HP-UX is the better product. Done ranting and raving sorry.

| I also consider myself to have an intermediate skill set. I can do most administrative tasks, but certainly would not call myself a "guru" or an "expert" by any means. I have used HP-UX a lot, but am not as familiar with Sun, although I have been planning on learning it for some time now. | |

| I`m a big fan but don`t have time to learn it properly.
In a smaller shop your spread pretty thin and its hard to gain depth in linux that way.
I would love to know more and after my CCIE I plan on learning much more in Unix and Linux.

| Get "Running Linux" from O'Reilly. Go through it chapter by chapter with a computer that you use to test stuff out on. You will really learn a lot and you don't have to spend a ton of time with it. That's mainly how I learned it. Might want to sign up for a local LUG as well. When newbies ask questions, it's natural to want to help, and you will be surprised at how much you learn this way. | |
