Can a router become a switch?

| Maybe this is not the best forum to post this, but here it goes....
I'm walking around the local CompUSA, looking at home-networking stuff and I came up with a question that I'm not sure of the answer.
Is it possible to take a multi-port (8-port) router and turn it into a switch? I think the answer is "yes", but I'm not exactly confident.
In addition to working towards my CCNA, I'm playing around with Linux. I'm creating a home-network of sort and I'm not sure if I can get the Linux part to work (which would be my router/NAT/FW), therfore, I was thinking about getting the 8-port router (below) from SMC as a "back-up plan". This SMC router has NAT, Firewall, etc built-in plus, it has an RS-232 for the modem (I'm out in the sticks, no broadband, no DSL, no ISDN, I'm SOL). But if I can get the Linux part to work, the router would then become my switch/hub for my LAN.
For example: There's a an 8 port router at http://www.smc.com/drivers_download...y/7008BR_MN.pdf
and an 8-port switch
http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?action...de=SMC-EZ6508TX
Any ideas or suggestions I appreciate it.

Thanks,
Take a closer look at the specs, those are both router/switch combination.

| I know for sure you can buy router/switch combos; that's what I use. | |

| I guess I got wrapped up in the word "router". And yes, I glazed over the specs not picking up on the key words like "dual-speed switch" and "provides switching"; my bad.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to respond (and not flaming me);-)
