| For a person that has dealt strictly with MS products, I'd like to make myself more marketable. I'd like to know what types of books are good for a person just starting out with UNIX/LINUX with a goal to become a certified productive UNIX/LINUX administrator. I will have a machine dedicated for enhancing my hands-on knowledge but for now I'd just like some guidance as to where to start.
Thanx Much!

I suggest you buy "Running Linux", check out the tutorials at www.linuxnewbie.org and www.linuxdoc.org and start off with Mandrake. You can download a copy at www.linuxiso.org | |

| Along with ccieToBe's recommendations, you also might want to pick up a good certification prep book. I have been using "Linux+ Certification Bible" and O'Reilly's "LPI Linux Certification In a Nutshell." Both books do an excellent job teaching Linux as well as preparing for certifications. I have found that studying to pass a cert exam is a great way to learn.
Good Luck!

| Hey guys, I'd like to thank both of you for responding to my post. I am very excited about learning a new OS for both personal enhancement and marketablity from a career standpoint. Again, I appreciate your recommendations!
Thanx Much!!

| I know I'm coming in late under the wire, but stop, don't pass go, don't collect 200 until you by "The Secret Decoder Ring" Minasi has a book out called "Linux for Windows NT/2000 Administrators - The Secret Decoder Ring". It's pretty thorough, and it comes with Mandrake. I would recommend dling Red Hat, but choose your flavor, I have also litmus tested SuSE and Caldera.
Hope this helps!
Cheers! |
