| Red Hat 7.2 or Mandrake 8.0 are the best in my opinion for newbies. Caldera is very good as well, but they tend to lag behind in the most recent tools whereas both Mandrake and Red Hat are cutting edge. They are the easiest to install and have a great deal of support available, and the hardware detection has vastly improved over the last few years, as has the usability and friendliness of their desktops. I would pick Red Hat 7.2 since it is used in corporate environments the most and would be great to know. | |

| www.linuxiso.org has images of most every linux distribution out now.
But if your wanting linux quick
head on down to your local walmart and get mandrake.
Or bestbuy for several distributions, which includes manuals and extra software. | |

| I remember trying to download the most recent version of bash and the one that they had available at their site was several versions behind the one that was recommended in my book. This seemed to be true of most of their tools at the time (this was about two years ago). Maybe it has changed, but I also had a harder time finding software for their distros than for other flavours and at the time I was still a beginner, so it was kind of annoying. But I am still glad I started off with them . . . at the time, their install routine was better than anyone else's. | |

| Look in the public library for O'Reilley's
"Learning Red Hat Linux" 2nd edition it comes with a full Red Hat 7.2 linux set (2 CD's). I've spent money on other distributions and somehow I just had to spend to much time getting them to work. I hope you like this solution. Best of Luck
We should declare war on problems not on people. We should love solutions rather than hating the people who have the problems. |
