Passed 22/2/2002.
I feel sorry for Roderick Smith who is the
author of the current Sybex Linux+ study guide. In my opinion the book is really superb and is true to the exam objectives. The exam was a #$%@ing joke. The questions were not as super hard as they were super abstract. I only passed because I have been messing about with linux for 2 years and having a 3 node Linux network at home helps big time. I work as a AIX administrator and studied Unixware7.
The first 19 questions of this exam were on
hardware. Lots of @#$%ed up Bios/CMOS questions. I began to wonder if I was sitting the right exam! I guarantee some of the questions did not have any correct awnswers
and the most correct awnswers were just plain stupid. I cannot honestly tell you where to begin learning cos the exam was all over the place. Experience is the best medicine to remedy this. I was expecting
lots of usermod,modprobe,rpm and permission
type questions. Very few of those, instead
they asked "what would you do to ensure your
pc booted up in the most stable state possible if you had some unreliable programs running" with @#$%ed up unrelated, undiagnostic answers to choose from.
Comptia is just screwing inexperienced hopefulls out of thier money by posing such
questions at people with 6 months experience
or more. Hell, I am experienced and this test was not a true test of knowledge.
However, There were some very easy basic questions in the mix as well.

I only used the Sybex book as a reference
although my experience accounted for about
60 of the questions the rest could be found in the book. Great book,c#$ppy exam.

I passed with 10 or so pecent to spare but
left the testing centre felling cheated.
I expect more from Comptia.

Thanks for the post and exam review.
and congrats on the pass
I will be taking the Linux+ exam next month.

I am not using the Sybex Linux+ book though
because I heard it was missing the Linux+ hardware objectives (reviews on Amazom.com).
So I wasn't going near that book.

Was there a lot of command line
administration questions on the exam?

Well Done!!

Does that sybex book go deep into hardware?

Congrads also.

But not many people are liking the Sybex books. Hmm...

To answer a few questions

The Sybex book does have a large section on
hardware but it focuses on all the wrong
stuff except the "scuzzy" card info.

There are admin questions too. I thought they
would ask me a question on how to create
a user with all sorts of features using one
command combination. None of that. I think
that they did not do justice to the admin section. I put a lot of time into knowing
my admin well cos I thought the really hard questions would come from there, but this
perverse exam contrated on strange niggily
things.

su,route,netstat,lpq,groupadd.. were some of the commands asked . Know some of the more
obscure su options. Also how to move around
in vi. Like what key combination to press
to get to a specifically numbered line.

I might not be able to respond quickly to
questions but I will try to help anyone
who asks for it if I have sufficient time.

Cheers

agh....I'm still not buying that book...lol

I'm actually using the Linux+ Bible,
it does mention to know down cold all the switches for the commands. O'well, I'll see how I do on the exam and let everyone know

I have to pass this exam the first time,
I can't afford to retake it with the prices
CompTIA is pulling. (over $300.00 Canadian folks!)
