| need them? I think the answer is probably yes. I am referring to programming knowlege beyond shell scripts. What is
a good language to be versed in? C perhaps. If so, how would someone with little programming knowlege (beyond batch files and shell scripts) start? Where to begin? Thanks!

| I don't think you NEED to know any programming languages beyond shell scripting but it would help. IMO Perl or Python would be two of the more usefull languages for a sys admin to know. C would be nice to know but might be overkill. | |

| There are plenty of Free online resources available.Just do a search for tutorials,C for beginers..etc.
SAMs make some good books.Learn C in 24 days,Unix,Linux programming..etc.The dummies books may be a good place to start if you have never done any programming.
I agree with ccieToBe.I think the more skills the better.Plus the more automation the better. Its also fun.
The admin who can script and program definately has an edge over the one that cant.

| Python is an excellent language to learn, so is php and perl.
I use to do asp/sql/ms sql database programming and now i run mysql and use php and have a linux rh 7.2 server and a client.
Programming is a must for an elite admin, especially if you want to really have fun and get more production out of linux.
Im also a cisco junkie so i get deep with both technologies. |
