| As some of you know I've been working with a few developers on a new Linux distribution called Darkfire Linux. Its primary focus is on security and secondarily performance. It's optimized for Athlon processors but should run on any 686. We should have our first working (beta) release in a few days. Are any of you interested in trying this out? If so I'll let you know when it's released and how to get a copy.

We're trying to accomplish some cool stuff with this distro like porting over FreeBSD's ports collection, digitally signing all packages, using sudo to reduce the need to "su" and get all of root's privilages and lots of other stuff that I can't think of off the top of my head

| It's available for download right now. This is our first release so it probably has a few bugs. We've found two so far. It hasn't been officially released to the public yet but if you consider yourself an experienced user feel free to try it out. You can download it from:
ftp://65.32.182.222/pub/darkfire/releases/beta-rc0/
We don't have a functioning installation program yet but we're working on one and hope to have it working with RC1 which should be released in about a month. This will be our first official release to the public. At this point the way to use it is to unpack the packages to some directory and chroot to it. The files have .dkf extensions but they're really tarballs.
For less experienced users I recommend waiting until RC1 is released.

| Yeah, it's taken us a while to get to this stage. Most of our developers are college students so things kind of took of in late December/early January when everyone got off from school for a while. We're planning on creating other release candidates about once a month until we've worked out the bugs. Hopefully that won't take too long. |
