Could you provide a few more details, like what distro are you using, the type of cable modem, etc.?

I have set up Redhat and Mandrake on DSL connections and it is fairly straight forward. Most Linux distros come with a program like Roaring Penquin. You just fire up Roaring Penquin, add a few details, like IP, Netmask and then just use a command like ppp-on, and you're all set.

I'm using an RCA cable Modem and Redhat 7.1
distu. You mentioned entering an IP address with your ISP. Comcast online gives out
addresses via DHCP and also assigns you a computer name for your machine which you must use in order to be authenticated.
Any help is appreciated big time

OK. I've never done this with a cable modem, but let's see if it works. I am assuming that cable modems use PPPOE like DSL. First, you'll need to get an IP address. Hopefully, you have a Windows machine already hooked up so you can use the command winipconfig (Win95/98) or ipconfig (Win2K/XP). Copy down all the information. Yes, I know how DHCP works, but I have done this set up with several Verizon DSL installs and have never had a problem.

Then find Roaring Penguin on Redhat (it should come with 7.1) and go through the install process. Answer that you do want to set it up with a dynamic IP. You can download and find more information about Roaring Penquin here www.roaringpenguin.com

There is also a great site for asking questions like this one. www.linuxnewbie.org

Let me know how it works out.
