| Which one do you use? Or do you have another editor of choice? I'm still using ee, and will probably try out these two in the near future. | |
|
| OK, this is probably going to sound stupid, but in almost all cases I go with vi. I don't get religious about it like some people (arguing over which text editor is best is pretty lame!). I started using it mainly becase I knew that EMacs won't fit on a floppy, so regardless of which is your personal favourite, if you need to use a rescue floppy, you will need to use vi, and I didn't want to get caught in the position of not knowing it whan am emergency cropped up. I notice that lots of people seem to prefer xedit, as it seems the 'simplest' from anm ordinary user's perspective . . . this is of course, as long as you can get into X! | |

| Sounds like a good reason to learn vi. | |
|
| It's actually pretty easy, though not terribly intuitive. Once you learn the basic commands, you learn to "think" in vi, and then it becomes easier. It is actually quite well-designed and it has its own sort of internal logic, and I just got used to it. As for EMacs, I only know a handful of commands and I am not all that familiar with LISP. I've used PICO as nedit as well, and find they work good for quick editing too, although they are not as universal. | |

| vi, I vote no question.
At the time when I was in university I am the mania for vi. I even not very comfort with dos EDIT editor and so I use "vi for dos"
As I know, there is a service for Unix when install in NT/2000, you will get vi editor for dos.

| i don't remember who said it, but emacs is nice for an operating system - go with vi for an editor! ;-)
vi is sweet, nigh-universal, small, fast, functional, ...
emacs is nice but not my preference and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone for most reasons (barring lispers and compsci students who need to use it as a req).
vim rocks too, is free and has prebuilt binaries for most systems including win32.
gvim is nice on linux/unix for a gtk (graphical) frontend.
personally, when i'm braindead i still lapse to joe - i've wordstar commands embedded in my failover circuits so it's a great standby on linux.

| Wow, this thread's been around for a while and gotten 450+ views. It looks like vi's the most popular by far and only two people have come to the realization that I've been at the console too long | |

| VI because you may find yourself in a situation, after a crash or in single user mode, when that is the only editor available. Plus, no matter what box you work on, it will have VI. You cannot say the same about any other editor.

| I also find that vi fits into UNIX more seamlessly as a UNIX utility than EMACS, which always strikes me as a bit more of an add-on . . . something laid "on top" of an already working system. That is total prejudice, though. The truth is, I just like vi better. | |
